Amid chaos in the civil aviation sector due to disruptions, cancellations, and delays, Air India has posted an advertisement for hiring pilots.
In a post shared on Instagram, the airline said, “The sky is not the limit; it’s just the beginning.”
“Command the future of Indian aviation. We are inviting experienced B737 and A320 pilots to join our growing fleet. Submit your applications by December 22,” it said.
For the A320 fleet, Air India said it is looking for experienced “type-rated” pilots in command. The airline said that for the B737 fleet, it wants to hire both experienced “type-rated” and “non-type-rated” pilots. The term “type rating” means certification for pilots who have completed training and testing on a specific type of aircraft.
While the advertisement previously might have only interested pilots, it has now gained attention from users due to problems in Air India’s competitor, IndiGo.
IndiGo has been cancelling hundreds of flights for several days due to operational troubles. The airline has been issuing apologies and sharing flight status updates to help passengers plan their travel.
IndiGo on Monday operated 1,800 flights, up from Sunday’s 1,650, as its operational crisis entered the seventh day on Monday. The airline reported 90% on-time performance (OTP) across the entire network, up from 75% on Sunday.
The airline said its network was fully restored.
All cancellations in Monday’s schedule were executed on Sunday, ensuring advance notifications were sent to customers. The airline stated that Rs 827 crore have already been refunded, with the remaining under process for cancellations up to December 15.
To address pilot fatigue, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) announced new Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) norms last year. However, IndiGo failed to reorganise its crew roster in line with the revised rules, resulting in flight cancellations, delays, and long queues for passengers. To stabilise the situation, the DGCA temporarily paused the implementation of some of the new safety norms.
IndiGo on Monday cancelled 562 flights from six metro airports, with 150 cancellations originating from Bengaluru airport alone. IndiGo has already cancelled 560 of its 2,300 daily flights from six metro airports on Monday, PTI reported.
