Beijing bites back at US tariffs by curbing Hollywood imports

* Beijing bites back at US tariffs by curbing Hollywood imports China restricts Hollywood imports in response to US tariffs * Hollywood’s share in China’s box office drops to 5% * Domestic films dominate China’s box office, accounting for 80% of revenue BEIJING, – China said on Thursday it would immediately restrict imports of Hollywood films in retaliation for President Donald Trump’s escalation of U.S. tariffs on imported Chinese goods, targeting one of the most high-profile American exports. Industry analysts said the financial impact was likely to be minimal, however, because Hollywood’s box office returns in China have declined significantly in recent years. After three decades during which China imported 10 Hollywood movies per year, Beijing’s National Film Administration said Trump’s tariff actions would further sour domestic demand for U.S. cinema in China. “We will follow market rules, respect the audience’s choices, and moderately reduce the number of American films imported,” the NFA said on its website. Hollywood studios once looked to China, the world’s second-largest film market, to help boost box office performance of …

Trump threatens more tariffs on China, vows to end talks if Beijing doesn’t reverse hike

Trump threatens more tariffs on China if Beijing does not withdraw retaliatory measures, increasing trade war concerns, reports AP. In a bold move, President Donald Trump has issued an ultimatum to China, threatening to impose an additional tariff of 50 per cent on Chinese imports if Beijing does not rescind its recently announced 34% tariff increase. The new tariffs, which China plans to implement in retaliation for U.S. tariffs, are set to take effect on April 9. Trump made the announcement on Truth Social, where he also declared that all talks with China regarding requested meetings would be terminated if China fails to withdraw its new tariff measures. This threat marks the latest escalation in the ongoing trade war between the U.S. and China. China also suspended imports from several U.S. companies and added more U.S. firms …

How China Is Exploiting ‘Failed’ Projects In India’s Neighbourhood

How China Is Exploiting ‘Failed’ Projects In India’s Neighbourhood

It is a known fact that in the last few years, China has made major inroads in the South Asian region, especially through infrastructure and connectivity projects. This has intensified under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), which was started in 2013. The grand projects have helped China gain major strategic footholds in the region. Here are some key ports and airports in India’s neighbourhood that provide China with a strong vantage position in the region—both through land and ocean—and challenge New Delhi’s security position. Two Dead Projects In Sri Lanka The Sri Lankan government had looked to Beijing for a loan to build its ambitious Hambantota port. China spent around $1.3 billion in total towards this. The China Export Import Bank extended the first half of the loan ($306 million) at the rate of 6.3%, while the second half ($757 million) was at 2%. The construction of the port began in 2007, and the first phase was completed in 2010. However, in 2012, only about 34 ships docked at Hambantota. As the port was …

China rebuffs Trump offer of tariff concessions if Beijing agrees to TikTok deal

Trump said this month the United States was in talks with four groups interested in acquiring TikTok [File] | Photo Credit: REUTERS China rebuffed on Thursday a suggestion from US President Donald Trump that he might offer to reduce tariffs on the country to get Beijing’s approval for the sale of popular social media platform TikTok. Trump said this month the United States was in talks with four groups interested in acquiring TikTok, with the app facing an uncertain future in the country. A US law has ordered TikTok to divest from its Chinese owner ByteDance or be banned in the United States, enacted over concerns that Beijing could exploit the video-sharing platform to spy on Americans or covertly influence US public opinion. The law took effect on January 19, a day before Trump’s inauguration, but he quickly announced a delay that has allowed it to continue to operate. That delay is set to expire on April 5. Trump told reporters at the White House on Wednesday that he could give China “a little reduction …

China reaction to US tariffs: Why Beijing is playing the long game over a zero-sum game | Explained News

From policymakers to experts, no one in China doubted that the Donald Trump 2.0 administration would hit the Asian giant hard again, especially in trade and tariffs. So, much before the US presidential election on November 5, China already had a Trump-strategy in place — as an old Chinese saying goes, prepare early instead of waiting for the storm to come. On February 1, citing unchecked trafficking into the US of fentanyl and illegal immigration, the Trump administration announced its first set of 10% additional tariffs on Chinese exports to the US (along with 25% new penalty tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico). China’s reaction — the announcement of retaliatory tariff but not much fire and brimstone in rhetoric — has made it clear that Beijing was prepared for this tariff escalation for a long time. Foreign Secretary arrives in Beijing as India, China attempt to repair ties | India News

Moving to resume bilateral engagements after the border disengagement, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri on Sunday landed in Beijing and met a top Chinese Communist Party (CPC) leader. Misri will meet his Chinese counterpart, Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong, on Monday for bilateral talks. In Misri’s meeting with Liu Jianchao, head of the International Department of the CPC’s central committee, “the two sides exchanged views on jointly implementing the important consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries, strengthening exchanges and dialogues, and promoting the improvement and healthy and stable development of China-India relations, as well as international and regional issues of common concern”, Chinese state-backed outlet Global Times reported. The Foreign Secretary’s visit is a move to repair damaged bilateral ties after Chinese incursions in 2020 triggered a military standoff along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh. Earlier, Chinese officials had said the two sides were discussing ways to bring ties back to “normal” — as it was before the face-off began in April-May 2020. Beijing has outlined its “wishlist”: Resumption …
