No one was injured in the incident. Police sources said that various divisions, such as the landline and SIM card distribution office headquarters, marketing, accounts, and billing, operate from this BSNL building. On Saturday (December 20, 2025), around 9 a.m., when BSNL employees arrived for work, they noticed thick black smoke billowing from the building and immediately informed the Fire and Rescue Services. Fire engines from Egmore, Vepery, Triplicane, Ice House, and other areas rushed to the spot and were engaged in firefighting operations. Due to the fire, thick black smoke engulfed parts of the Anna Salai area, causing inconvenience to motorists. Dubbed “Direct to Device”, BSNL says that the connectivity solution “converges satellite and terrestrial mobile networks to deliver seamless, reliable connectivity.” Developed in collaboration with Viasat, the network operator recently showcased satellite-powered two-way messaging services to attendees at the Indian Mobile Congress. In the trial, the company used a commercial Android smartphone with non-terrestrial network (NTN) connectivity to send a message roughly 36,000 km to one of Viasat’s satellites.
