No one was injured in the incident. Police sources said that various divisions, such as the landline and SIM card distribution office headquarters, marketing, accounts, and billing, operate from this BSNL building. On Saturday (December 20, 2025), around 9 a.m., when BSNL employees arrived for work, they noticed thick black smoke billowing from the building and immediately informed the Fire and Rescue Services. Fire engines from Egmore, Vepery, Triplicane, Ice House, and other areas rushed to the spot and were engaged in firefighting operations. Due to the fire, thick black smoke engulfed parts of the Anna Salai area, causing inconvenience to motorists. In the trial, the company used a commercial Android smartphone with non-terrestrial network (NTN) connectivity to send a message roughly 36,000 km to one of Viasat’s satellites.
