DGCA plans competency-based training framework for cabin crew

New Delhi: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is planning to introduce a competency-based training and assessment (CBTA) framework for cabin crew to enhance the quality and effectiveness of their training, a senior official said on Thursday. Singh, who was attending an aviation conference in Delhi on Thursday, said that the CBTA framework will be “voluntary for airlines” and added that the move is intended to strengthen the professional competencies of cabin crew members. “For instance, in situations such as a cabin fire, the framework will assess how crew members respond, communicate, and manage the situation. These performance indicators will be built into the training system to help improve real-world readiness,” Singh said. Indian airlines already practice CBTA for pilots. The test was introduced by the regulator in 2022. Senior vice-president for …

Southwest Airlines to end cabin service earlier on flights to reduce chance of injury | News Today News

Southwest Airlines says it is ending cabin service earlier on flights, requiring passengers to do the usual pre-landing procedures such as ensuring their seatbelts are fastened and returning their seats to an upright position earlier than before. Beginning on Dec. 4, a company spokesperson said, flight attendants will start preparing the cabin for landing at an altitude of 18,000 feet (5,486 meters) instead of 10,000 feet (3,048 meters). The change in procedure is designed to “reduce the risk of in-flight turbulence injuries” for crew members and passengers, the company said. While turbulence-related fatalities are quite rare, injuries have piled up over the years. More than one-third of all airline incidents in the United States from 2009 through 2018 were related to turbulence, and most of them resulted in one or more serious injuries but no damage to the plane, the National Transportation Safety Board reported. In May, a 73-year old man died on board a Singapore Airlines flight when the plane hit severe turbulence over the Indian Ocean. The airline had also previously announced other …

A Guide to Kolkata’s Cabin Hotels

A Guide to Kolkata’s Cabin Hotels

Kolkata’s cabin hotels, an offshoot of snugs in Ireland, offered women and families a safe space to go and enjoy restaurant food and beverages without breaking social taboos, and provided celebrities, politicians, businessmen, and lovers alike a refuge from the public eye. Drishya maps some of the surviving cabin hotels of Kolkata. It’s difficult to imagine being scandalised by women eating and drinking in bars, pubs, and restaurants today. In Victorian Ireland, a conservative Catholic country, women drinking in public, though legal, was practically sacrilegious. The solution to such misogynistic social norms was the “snug” — a small enclosed space separated from the rest of the bar where women and others who wished for privacy while indulging in Ireland’s pub culture could do so without causing a scandal. The snugs started appearing in Irish pubs in the late-1800s — a small, walled-off booth at the end of the bar, typically with wood-panelled walls and frosted glass windows. In India, the concept found similar popularity in Kolkata’s European eateries. By the late-1800s, the British Raj had …
