The Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation inquiry after the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) identified suspected irregularities worth ₹225 crore in the state’s flagship Gruha Lakshmi welfare scheme, including payments to deceased beneficiaries, duplicate bank accounts and gaps in beneficiary records. The audit, covering the scheme’s implementation in 2023-24 and 2024-25, found that ₹116 crore was transferred through 5.79 lakh instalments into the accounts of 1.08 lakh beneficiaries who had died after the scheme began. After detecting a fraudulent website having a similar URL as the Supreme Court’s official website, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) formed 60 special teams and carried out raids at 80 locations across 16 states and union territories as part of a major crackdown on the cybercrime infrastructure facilitating digital arrest scams, agency said on Thursday. The searches were carried out as part of an ongoing investigation aimed at dismantling a targeted operational network. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday arrested the fifth accused in connection with the murder case of West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari`s personal assistant Chandranath Rath from Uttar Pradesh`s Varanasi, central agency officials confirmed. Officials said the accused has been identified as 40-year-old Vinay Rai alias Pumpum Rai, originally hailing from the Zamani area of Uttar Pradesh`s Ghazipur. Earlier on Monday, the agency had arrested the main shooter, identified as Rajkumar Singh, from Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh. The arrest was made with the help of the Uttar Pradesh Police. CBI sources identified the accused as Rajkumar Singh, a resident of Chhapar in Uttar Pradesh. A joint operation involving the CBI and local police was carried out on Sunday. The investigating team had earlier raided a house in Delhi`s Swaroop Nagar area, but Rajkumar could not be traced there. According to sources, Yash Yadav was acquainted with another accused, Vikas Biwal. The investigation has revealed that Vikas Biwal’s father, Dinesh Biwal, allegedly scanned the hard copy of the NEET-UG question paper and converted it into PDF files. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a case into the alleged irregularities in the operation and management of night shelters in the national Capital run by the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) in 2023. Multiple individuals, CBI said, were engaged in other independent professions or businesses or employed elsewhere. (HT file photo) A preliminary enquiry in the matter has revealed that the shelter management authority (SMA), which was responsible for deploying manpower including supervisors, caretakers (for three shifts), sweepers and women security guards (for women shelters) and relievers for all staff, engaged bogus employees who never worked at shelters, manipulated their attendance and credit salaries in their accounts. The agency has named Suhail Khan, president of Sofia Educational and Welfare Society – the SMA awarded the work for running the night shelters, two other private individuals – Amir and Sonu Kushwaha, and unknown public servants in its first information report (FIR) filed on April 27, which became public recently. A Delhi court on Tuesday sentenced two Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officers — a joint director and an inspector — to three months’ imprisonment each for conducting an illegal search and arrest at the residence of an Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer 26 years ago. The officers will not be sent to prison immediately, as the court suspended the sentence for one month (Photo for representation) Delivering the sentence, judicial magistrate first class Shashank Nandan Bhatt of Tis Hazari courts observed that public servants cannot be permitted to abuse their powers to settle personal scores. The court had on April 18 convicted the two officers — present joint director Ramneesh and VK Pandey, then a CBI inspector — under penal provisions related to house trespass, mischief and voluntarily causing hurt, for forcibly entering the IRS officer’s Paschim Vihar residence to carry out a “mala fide” search and arrest.
