Praveen Chithravel has established himself as India’s leading men’s triple jumper through a combination of consistency and record-breaking performances. The national record holder heads to the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow after narrowly missing a medal in Birmingham four years ago. Having since added medals at the Asian Games, Asian Championships and World University Games, the 25-year-old arrives as one of India’s medal contenders in the field events. Early days Born in a village in Tamil Nadu’s Thanjavur district, Praveen grew up in a modest household. His father worked as a daily wage farm labourer, while his mother managed the family at home. His talent first came to light when he won gold at the inaugural Khelo India School Games in 2018. Chithravel was pushed all the way by veteran Kartik Unnikrishnan, who finished second with 16.80m while NCAA champion Selva Prabhu managed 16.79m to win the bronze medal. In all, six jumpers cleared the qualification mark of 16.28m and made it to the continental mega event to be held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan from September 19-October 4. At the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, Praveen failed to progress beyond the qualification round with a best jump of 16.74m. Former Asian champion Abdulla Aboobacker clinched the men’s triple jump title at the Indian Open Jumps Competition 2026 in Bengaluru, edging national record holder Praveen Chithravel in a closely contested event. Competing at the Anju Bobby High Performance Centre, Aboobacker recorded a winning jump of 16.83m on his third attempt to secure the gold medal. Chithravel, the Asian Games bronze medallist and holder of the Indian national record (17.37m), finished second with a best effort of 16.78m after opening with a 16.59m leap. Gailey Venister claimed bronze with 16.48m. The contest marked the eighth head-to-head meeting between Aboobacker and Chithravel since the Federation Cup Athletics Championships in 2021.
