11 road ministry officials removed over highway collapses: Gadkari

The Union road transport ministry removed 11 officials from service following performance assessments and took disciplinary action against another 11 officers for negligence and dereliction of duty in connection with collapses, cave-ins and structural failures on newly constructed national highway projects in 2025 and 2026, according to information tabled in Parliament on Wednesday. The ministry said show-cause notices have been issued to both the authority’s engineer (third party) and the contractor in the Delhi-Dehradun case. The ministry said action against contractors, concessionaires and consultants included termination of contracts, financial penalties, debarment, blacklisting and declaring firms as non-performers, depending on the nature of deficiencies. He detailed 19 incidents across Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Meghalaya. The grill had already been heavily damaged around 10 days ago due to a vehicle crashing into it. Further, the bridge itself has been declared unsafe for four-wheelers and heavy vehicles by the gram panchayat since the past few years and a warning board has been installed at the bridge. Dhanashree Palkar, gram panchayat sarpanch, said, “The grill was damaged in an accident 10-12 days ago and completely got swept away due to the rain in the last two days. A portion of a Hanuman temple collapsed in Yashwadi village in Maharashtra’s Parbhani district on Saturday afternoon, prompting an immediate rescue operation by local authorities, reported the PTI. The incident occurred at around 3.30 pm when the slab of the temple’s assembly hall, known as the sabha mandap, suddenly gave way. Police, district administration officials and emergency response teams were quickly deployed to the site following the collapse. According to officials, around 25 people had been rescued from beneath the debris by the time initial reports emerged. Rescue teams continued their efforts as authorities worked to determine whether more people remained trapped, according to the PTI. Officials said it was not immediately clear how many devotees were inside the structure when the collapse occurred. The officials were also assessing the condition of those rescued, and there was no confirmed information regarding serious injuries in the immediate aftermath of the incident.
