Three people died after an under-construction warehouse in Kolkata’s Taratala area collapsed on Wednesday (June 24, 2026) afternoon. Eighteen workers are trapped under the structure.

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari reached the accident site along with a few Ministers from his Cabinet. “All the agencies are working together. We have rescued 21 persons of which three have died,” Mr. Adhikari told media persons at the accident site. About 18 persons are still trapped inside, contact has been established between them and rescue personnel, he said.
Rescue teams, doctors and personnel of the Kolkata Police reached the spot, and attempts are being made to bring out workers trapped under the debris.
According to locals present at the accident site, 50 to 60 workers were working at the site when the accident happened. Rescue teams began to cut an iron beam that had fallen and started bringing the workers out.
The godown is owned by private firm. The Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Authority had granted a 30-year lease to the firm to set up a multi-storeyed warehouse and a cold storage facility.
The Indian Army too joined the rescue operation mobilising four columns of Eastern Command. Following a distress call from the administration, a specialised team of Army rescue personnel, specialist engineers and medical personnel are assisting in rescue efforts to find several people believed to be trapped under heavy concrete debris.
Sanjoy Kumar Mukherjee, public relations officer of the Port Authority, said that after the accident cranes were mobilised to the site for rescue and debris clearance. He said gas cutter sets, the port’s fire brigade units and ambulance with a medical team have reached. Estate Division and Port Security teams, and senior officers reached the site immediately for coordination and security, Mr. Mukerjee said.
Locals claimed that they heard several workers buried under the debris. Attempts were made to drill a hole through the debris and reach out to the trapped workers.
Earlier, West Bengal Minister Indranil Khan reached the site of the accident, and rescuing trapped workers was the topmost priority of the State government. Minister for Municipal Affairs Agnimitra Paul and Kolkata Municipal Corporation Commissioner Smita Pandey also reached the accident site and were supervising rescue operations. Some workers have also been rescued from the accident site.
The Disaster Management Department of the West Bengal government have opened a control room where people can reach out at 8697981070, 033 22143526 and 033 22535185 in connection with the accident at Taratala.
