Collector tells HC 85% of city canal desilting work completed

The Ernakulam District Collector has informed the Kerala High Court that 85% of desilting works of the city canals have been completed. The report was filed in a petition seeking a report from the State regarding the preparation of a permanent mechanism for the proper management of the Thevara-Perandoor Canal. The court had directed the Collector to inform the steps taken for de-clogging the canal beside the KSRTC bus stand and the Perandoor Canal, expediting the Mullassery Canal works, and repairing the drains at Madhava Pharmacy Junction, where M.G. Road branches off from Banerjee Road. The government has sanctioned ₹5.37 crore for the completion of the remaining 175-metre stretch of the Mullassery canal. Funds have been sanctioned to the Kerala Water Authority, Kerala State Electricity Board and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited to shift their utilities from the canal. The work is expected to begin after the rainy season. Marri Vamshi Mohan | Photo Credit: By Arrangement A disproportionate assets case was registered by the Anti-Corruption Bureau against Marri Vamshi Mohan, Special Grade Deputy Collector attached to the Urban Land Ceiling wing in the office of the Medchal-Malkajgiri District Collector, over allegations of acquiring assets beyond known sources of income through corrupt practices. Officials conducted searches on Friday (May 22) at his residence, office and 11 other locations linked to his relatives, associates and alleged benamis. During the searches, the ACB unearthed assets valued at around ₹6.22 crore. The seized assets allegedly include 19 open plots valued at ₹4.46 crore, an independent house at NGOs Colony in Vanasthalipuram, two flats located at Manikonda and Masjid Banda collectively valued at ₹1.12 crore, and a farmhouse spread across two acres at Narrepally in Ibrahimpatnam valued at ₹10 lakh. Officials said the market value of the properties is likely to be significantly higher than the officially recorded value. To mitigate the risks of extreme weather, industries, factories, and contractors have been directed to reschedule all labour-intensive tasks, specifically halting operations between 12 and 4 pm when temperatures peak. The advisory follows warnings issued by the India Meteorological Department that temperatures are likely to remain above normal in the coming months. Recent data highlights the severity. Lohegaon recorded 43.2 degrees Celcius, the highest temperature in Pune, while Shivajinagar recorded 40.8 degrees C. Vibhu The Kerala High Court on Wednesday (May 13, 2026) sought a report from the Principal District and Sessions Judge, Palakkad, about an incident in which three siblings approached the Palakkad District Collector seeking assistance to end the deteriorating marital relationship of their parents. A Bench of Justice P.V. Kunhikrishnan sought the report, following media reports about the incident. The court observed that children cannot be used as pawns. The siblings — two sisters aged 12 years and 10 years, and their eight year old younger brother — had approached the Collector to end the strife between their parents. Their mother reportedly wanted to live with them separately after her return from abroad, while their father reportedly was addicted to liquor. The siblings wanted both their mother and father to live together with them. The children had earlier approached the child welfare committee, citing that they were emotionally exhausted due to the feud between their parents and police cases. Ramsundar Reddy to remove their land in Garjularega village from prohibitory list, which would allow them to build houses in the government allocated land. An additional collector in Akola district of Maharashtra has been booked for allegedly extorting money from a stone crusher owner and threatening other businessmen, a police official said on Wednesday, reported the PTI. The additional collector, Pramod Rahul Gaikwad, has denied all allegations. FIR registered An FIR was registered against Gaikwad at the MIDC police station on Monday. The case has been filed under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) as well as the Prevention of Corruption Act, as per the PTI. The officials said that an investigation was underway. Beed Collector Vivek Johnson visited several sites in Wadwani, Dharur and Parli tehsils to resolve land acquisition hurdles for railway projects, hearing grievances from stakeholders, officials said on Sunday. Work on the ambitious Beed–Parli Vaijnath railway corridor project is currently underway. The project is being seen as a game-changer for the district and the region, as it will improve connectivity to Mumbai and Pune, two of Maharashtra’s largest cities and major economic hubs, PTI reported.  During the field visit, Johnson, accompanied by railway, district and state officials, reviewed sites in Bavi and Lonwal villages in Wadwani tehsil and examined technical issues that had stalled land acquisition, an official said. “The collector also looked into grievances raised by residents of Deodahiphal, Chatgaon and Fakir Jawala villages in Dharur tehsil. Maharashtra: Two arrested for murder of elderly scrap collector in Latur

Two persons were arrested for allegedly murdering an elderly scrap collector in Latur, a police official said on Thursday. As reported by news agency PTI, Vitthal Sopan Sasane (65), a native of Sugao in Chakur tehsil, was found dead in front of a shop along Ring Road on Tuesday night, following which a case was registered, the official said. The official further added, “Our probe zeroed in on Om Sachin Janrao (30) and Vaibhav alias Monya Prabhakar Munde (24). The two confessed to murdering Sasane following a dispute over sleeping space.
