Bill Gates is Gifting Everyone With the Company’s Original Source Code

Image: Bill Gates/YouTube Fifty years ago, Bill Gates and his childhood friend Paul Allen founded a company called “Micro-Soft” in a strip mall in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Half a century later, the company has cemented its place among tech giants and ranks as the world’s second-largest company. Currently, the only company with a higher market cap is Apple, maker of the ubiquitous iPhone. While Microsoft is reflecting on its past successes in honor of its 50-year anniversary this April, including Gates sharing the company’s original source code, the tech giant is also hustling to secure its place among the leaders of the artificial intelligence revolution. After largely missing the boat on smartphones and the shift to mobile devices, Microsoft is hoping to avoid a repeat of this mistake and instead dominate the fields of cloud computing and generative AI. Microsoft still dominates office software and operating systems Microsoft’s Windows operating system — originally called MS-DOS — runs the majority of the world’s computers. The company also made a name for itself by dominating the office …

Intel CEO Tan Starts Company’s Pivot: Spin Off Non-Core Assets

Intel CEO Tan Starts Company’s Pivot: Spin Off Non-Core Assets

Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan. Image: Intel Business/YouTube Intel will spin off assets that aren’t part of its core mission, according to Bloomberg. Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan, who became CEO in mid-March after Pat Gelsinger took a heavily encouraged suggestion to retire, made the announcement on March 31 at the Intel Vision conference. Tan did not define the core business or which parts of the business would be affected. Intel will try to expand its core business using AI and Software 2.0, Tan said. Software 2.0 is a term about the way generative AI allows for coding without writing individual lines of code; instead, the technique, named by computer vision scientist Andrej Karpathy, uses natural language and an AI model. Software 2.0 has some similarities to “vibe coding,” although Software 2.0 encompasses more possible uses for generative AI. More must-read AI coverage Tan tries to turn Intel around as other semiconductor companies pull ahead in the AI boom Despite the AI boom, Intel was not lifted on the wave of demand for chips. Mumbai Man Hangs Himself, Posts Suicide Note Blaming Wife On His Company’s Website

Mumbai: A 41-year-old man has left a note blaming his wife and her aunt before killing himself inside a hotel room in Mumbai. Nishant Tripathi died by suicide in his room at the Sahara Hotel last Friday after uploading his suicide note on the website of the company he worked for, said police. He checked into the hotel three days earlier and had allegedly put up a ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign – used by guests for privacy – before hanging himself. On getting no response for a long time, the hotel staff used a master key to enter his room and alerted cops when they found him dead. Cops said they have opened a probe and filed a case against Apoorva Parikh and her aunt Prarthana Mishra for abetment to suicide based on a complaint by the victim’s mother Neelam Chaturvedi, a women’s rights activist. No one has been arrested yet. In the suicide note, which was secured with a password on his company’s website, he expressed his love for his wife and held her …

The 0 Ayaneo 3 is the most exciting PC handheld the company’s yet made

The $900 Ayaneo 3 is the most exciting PC handheld the company’s yet made

Ayaneo builds the best-looking handheld PCs in the business, but they’ve always been boutique. The 2023 Ayaneo 2, for example, cost $1,300 for an arguably worse experience than the $400 Steam Deck. But that experience isn’t dampening my excitement for the new 7-inch Ayaneo 3. Not only does this one start at $900, within striking distance of the highest-end handhelds you’ll find at retail, it’s the most feature-packed portable I’ve seen — with two USB4 ports and OcuLink and RGB-ringed Hall effect joysticks and your choice of two seemingly killer screens. Perhaps most exciting: a way to finally fix a handheld’s joystick and button layout to match your ergonomic preferences! Finally.Animation by Ayaneo Ayaneo is calling the Ayaneo 3 “the world’s first modular handheld,” because there’ll be other modular options too. An extra $139 buys a set of six modules that let you swap out your joysticks for analog sticks, a six-button microswitch pad for fighting games, or even D-pads and face buttons with conductive silicone underneath for a different feel. Six modules and extra …

Sonos revenue falls in the aftermath of company’s messy app debacle

Sonos revenue falls in the aftermath of company’s messy app debacle

Sonos is still trying to climb out from the hole it dug itself earlier this year by recklessly shipping an overhauled mobile app well before the software was actually ready. Today, just a couple weeks after the release of its latest hardware products — the Arc Ultra and Sub 4 — Sonos reported its fiscal Q4 2024 earnings. And the damage done by the app debacle is clear. Revenue was down 8 percent year over year, which Sonos attributed to “softer demand due to challenging market conditions and challenges resulting from our recent app rollout.” During the quarter, the company sank $4 million into unspecified “app recovery investments.” (Sonos previously estimated it could spend up to $30 million to resolve all of the trouble that has stemmed from the rebuilt app.) “To date, we have released 16 updates and restored 90 percent of missing features,” the company wrote in its earnings presentation. “Moving forward, we’ll alternate between major and minor releases. This will allow us to maintain our momentum of making improvements while also ensuring …
