PCMC cuts water supply by 15 per cent; Pawna dam storage falls to 19 per cent

The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) on Friday announced a 15 per cent reduction in water supply across the city following a sharp decline in Pawna dam storage. According to PCMC officials, the water stock in Pawna Dam has dropped to just 19 per cent. ‘Dam is right in front of us, yet we struggle for water’: Pune’s villages battle deepening crisis | Pune News

As Pune city braces for alternate-day water supply from June 15 due to critically low storage in the Khadakwasla dam chain, residents in several rural pockets and peri-urban areas of the district say they have been living with a far more severe reality for years, walking for hours, depending on tankers and rationing every litre of water despite living in some of the highest rainfall zones. Across villages in Ambegaon, Junnar, Bhor, Mulshi, and Purandar, among others, residents say the annual water crisis has deepened even as the region receives abundant monsoon rainfall and hosts reservoirs that supply water to urban and industrial centres across Pune district. For many families in the tribal hamlets of Bhimashankar temple area in Ambegaon taluka, fetching water has become a daily struggle. “Our area is largely tribal and women from remote hamlets have to walk across steep, rocky hillsides in search of water. They return carrying pots on their heads through difficult terrain. It has become a routine for survival because wells have dried up and hand pumps no …

Mettur dam may not be opened for irrigation on June 12

Mettur dam may not be opened for irrigation on June 12

As on Saturday, the storage of the dam was about 41 tmcft against the capacity of 93.47 tmcft. | Photo Credit: E. LAKSHMI NARAYANAN The probability of the Mettur dam getting opened on the scheduled date of June 12 appears to be remote, in view of the poor storage and the forecast of a poor southwest monsoon (June-September) this year. Giving an account of the situation on the water front, a senior government official said the storage of the dam was “not even 50%.” The India Meteorological Department had predicted the delayed onset of the monsoon, apart from lowering its forecast to 90% of the long period average of rainfall against the original 92%. Under such circumstances, it is “out of the question” to open the dam, observes the official. As on Saturday(May 30), the dam’s storage was about 41 thousand million cubic feet (tmcft) against the capacity of 93.47 tmcft. Inflow to the dam was around 1,950 cubic feet per second (cusecs), with the outflow being about 1,000 cusecs. Besides, the storage of reservoirs …

In post-Naxal Dantewada, survey begins for Bodhghat dam, raising displacement fears

The Chhattisgarh government has restarted a survey of the long-stalled Bodhghat Multipurpose Project on the Indravati river in Dantewada, reviving a dam proposal that could submerge, fully or partially, up to 56 villages in the once Maoism-hit Bastar region — and has triggered uncertainty among tribal communities that have yet to be told where they will be resettled. The project received World Bank loan approval in 1984 but was halted in 1987 following protests over displacement, forest loss and concerns raised by tribal communities. (HT Photo) Dantewada district collector Devesh Dhruv confirmed survey instructions had been issued. “The target is to complete the overall survey within seven to eight months. Teams from the agencies involved are visiting the area continuously,” he said. The Bodhghat Multipurpose Project, handled by the Water Resources Department (WRD), is one of the oldest pending river valley projects in Bastar, first envisaged in 1979. It received World Bank loan approval in 1984 but was halted in 1987 following protests over displacement, forest loss and concerns raised by tribal communities. Efforts to revive …
