Amid monsoon concerns, residents of Darukhana razed homes march for housing rehabilitation policy in Mumbai | Mumbai News

3 min readMumbaiJun 4, 2026 08:33 PM IST Almost a year after their homes in Darukhana on the eastern front of the city were demolished, residents of the area marched from their homes to Azad Maidan on Thursday. Having continued to live on the site of their broken homes, over the rubble, the upcoming monsoon raised anxieties among the homeless about their continued existence and their children’s health. Much of the land on the Eastern Freeway, which has been occupied by warehouses and slum homes for decades, belongs to the Mumbai Port Trust Authority (MbPA) under the central government. Despite the residents having lived in the area for three to four generations with documents to show proof — with the previous generations having worked at the port — the MbPA’s lack of a housing policy means they did not receive alternative homes. On May 12, around 200 homes along New Tank Bundar Road were demolished, leaving around 500 people out on the streets. Officials from the MbPA warned other informal homes in the area too …

Praful Patel skips NCP meeting at Sunetra’s residence | Mumbai News

2 min readMumbaiMay 27, 2026 01:32 AM IST In what is seen as a continuation of the ongoing crisis within the NCP, party’s national working president Praful Patel did not attend the party meeting on Tuesday evening. According to sources close to Patel, the Rajya Sabha MP was in Mumbai but did not attend the meeting held at Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar’s official residence Devgiri. During the meeting, sources said the party’s state unit chief Sunil Tatkare expressed displeasure over he and Patel being criticised in the media and nobody from the NCP coming forward to extend support, including senior ministers. NCP’s seniormost minister Chhagan Bhujbal reportedly suggested moving forward, which reportedly irked Tatkare leading to an exchange of words between the top leadership of the party. Meanwhile, Sunetra on Tuesday asked party ministers, legislators and officebearers to take the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) seriously and called for greater participation to ensure no eligible voters were skipped from the electoral rolls. She has asked party leaders to make immediate appointments of Booth Level Agents …

The ‘burden’ of proof: As chargesheets surge in volume and data, accused seek access to computers | Mumbai News

The ‘burden’ of proof: As chargesheets surge in volume and data, accused seek access to computers | Mumbai News

In 2006, some of the accused in the Mumbai serial train blasts case had to approach the court for permission to keep their over 10,000-page chargesheet in their barracks; the overcrowded Arthur Road Jail barrack barely had space for its prisoners. Twenty years later, the jail still remains crowded, chargesheets have only got longer, and the struggle for space has gone digital. Undertrials across jails are seeking access to computers or laptops to read the electronic evidence against them. From accused in the now-concluded Malegaon 2008 blast case to those booked in the Elgaar Parishad case of 2017-18, several accused have been given permission to use computers, with curbs. While jail authorities oppose such pleas, citing lack of adequate staff to monitor usage and apprehensions of misuse, courts have been receptive on the grounds that the accused need to access e-data against them. In the terror scare case involving the Ambani residence Antilia, for example, the NIA submitted in court that it had collected 1,000 terabytes of e-data — equivalent to roughly 10 billion pages …

Pati Patni Aur Woh Do review: Ayushmann-starrer saved by funny film references

Pati Patni Aur Woh Do has opened to mixed but largely entertaining reactions, describing the Ayushmann Khurrana and Sara Ali Khan starrer as a lighthearted romantic comedy packed with confusion, chaos, and humour. Directed by Mudassar Aziz, the film serves as a spiritual sequel to the 2019 hit Pati Patni Aur Woh and features an ensemble cast including Wamiqa Gabbi, Rakul Preet Singh, Vijay Raaz, and Tigmanshu Dhulia. What keeps the audience hooked? The film generated strong buzz before release because of its quirky trailer, chartbuster songs, and the fresh pairing of Ayushmann and Sara. The comedy entertainer had the potential to become one of the season’s major theatrical crowd-pullers. However, the film has garnered mixed reactions for its performances, storyline, and most importantly, comic timing. Ayushmann Khurrana barely manages to keep his accent intact while still delivering an entertaining comic performance. Sara Ali Khan steals the spotlight by building up the confusion that drives the plot forward. Rakul Preet Singh’s efforts to stay true to the accent as Nilofer Khan are slightly noticeable. Wamiqa …

HC declares Bhojshala complex a temple, suggests separate land for mosque

The Madhya Pradesh High Court (HC) on Friday declared that the disputed Bhojshala complex in Dhar is a temple dedicated to Goddess Saraswati and said the Muslim community may approach the state government for allotment of separate land in the district for construction of a mosque. Delivering its verdict in the Bhojshala Temple-Kamal Maula Mosque complex dispute, the court also observed that there were indications of a Sanskrit teaching centre and a temple of Goddess Saraswati at Bhojshala. The dispute concerns the religious character of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI)-protected monument in Dhar district. The Hindu community considers Bhojshala to be a temple dedicated to Vagdevi (Goddess Saraswati), while the Muslim side identifies the monument as the Kamal Maula Mosque. A petitioner from the Jain community has claimed that the disputed complex is a medieval Jain temple and gurukul. Following the controversy surrounding the Bhojshala complex, the ASI on April 7, 2003, issued an order allowing Hindus to worship at the complex every Tuesday and Muslims to offer namaz there every Friday. The Hindu …

India lobbies for expansion in UNSC, says lack of reforms limits its credibility

India on Friday strongly called for expansion of the UN Security Council with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar saying that the effectiveness and credibility of the global body will remain “constrained” without reforming it. Jaishankar made the remarks at a conclave of the foreign ministers of the BRICS nations in New Delhi. “We meet at a time when the effectiveness of global governance and the credibility of multilateralism are under increasing scrutiny,” he said. “The world today is more interconnected, complex, and multipolar than when many of our current institutions were created. Yet, the structures that underpin global governance have not kept pace with these changes,” he noted. Jaishankar listed four specific points to press for reforming the key international bodies and multilateral trading systems, and asserted that the reform of the United Nations and its subsidiary bodies remains “central”. “The membership of the United Nations has expanded significantly, and its responsibilities have grown. Yet, key structures, particularly the Security Council, continue to reflect an earlier era,” he said. “Without meaningful reform, including expansion in …
