The Supreme Court on Tuesday sought to know from the Union government whether diplomatic baggage can be subjected to scanning in the country or they enjoy immunity from search. A Bench of Justices Hrishikesh Roy and Satish Chandra Sharma posed the query to Additional Solicitor General (ASG) S.V. Raju, appearing for the Enforcement Directorate. He sought time to respond to the issue. “The question which arises for consideration is whether Indian government can scan a diplomatic package. Can it be done? Whether there is immunity or not? What is the procedure?” the Bench asked the ASG while posting the matter for hearing after three weeks. Mr. Raju said he would seek instructions on the issue and get back to the court. “Prima facie, if it is used for a crime then it can be and does not remain a diplomatic baggage,” the ASG said. Speaking after the formal launch of the packages and flagging off tourism vehicles along with Vijayawada Central MLA Malladi Vishnu at the office of the AP Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC) in Vijayawada, Mr. Satyanarayana, who holds the portfolio of Endowments, said these packages were designed by the APTDC in collaboration with Pilgrim Pathways Pvt. Ltd., linking historic temples and famous places in the respective regions. The packages would include facilities like ‘sheeghra darshan, special pujas and abhishekams’, he added. The 18 new packages were being launched in the first phase across the State linking pilgrim centres such as Tirumala, Srisailam, Mahanandi, Ahobilam, Yaganti, Srikalahasti, Annavaram, Simhachalam, Arasavalli, Srikurmam, Amavarati, Bhimavaram, Daksharam, Samarlakota and Pithapuram among others. BSF seizes 3 packages of suspected heroin in Amritsar, thwarts smuggling attempt

The Border Security Force (BSF) foiled a smuggling attempt in Punjab`s Amritsar and seized three packages suspected to be containing 3.210 kg of heroin wrapped with adhesive tape, the force said on Saturday. This is the third seizer of suspected smuggled heroin in recent time by the BSF in Amritsar. On December 24, 2023 BSF arrested three smugglers who were trying to get away with the consignment of heroin.  “In the early hours of January 6th, 2024, at around 5:30 AM, alert Border Security Force (BSF) personnel stationed at the border uncovered a dropping sound near the border fence in the proximity of Village-Daoke, District-Amritsar“, the BSF said in a press statement. Following a thorough search of the area, BSF troops successfully recovered three packages suspected to contain heroin (Gross weight – approximately 3.210 kg ), securely wrapped with yellow adhesive tape and one Android mobile phone from a farming field, the force further said, ANI reported. Twitter’s boss Elon Musk has reportedly instructed employees to not pay vendors which includes rent for its offices in anticipation of potential lawsuits against the social media giant, a report said.
