In bizarre twist, gang robs thief of stolen gold, police nab all five

In an anti-climax of sorts, a gang of five robbed a thief of gold worth ₹1.75 lakh in east Bengaluru’s Avalahalli — just minutes after he had stolen the gold from a house. Frustrated over losing the stolen valuables, the thief went on to commit two more house thefts. Ten days later, the police arrested all five accused. The first accused has been identified as Isayi Raja alias Kunta, 30, a resident of Amruthahalli. The members of the other gang have been identified as Mounesh Rao, Darshan M., Chandan R., and Sunil M., all aged between 20 and 23. The incident occurred on November 22. Raja allegedly noticed that a family in Manduru near Avalahalli had left their house late at night. He entered their house through an ajar window. “After stealing valuables, the accused went to a nearby graveyard where he had parked his bike. Another gang of four persons noticed him, intercepted him, and robbed him in the name of questioning,” an officer investigating the case told The Hindu. After the robbers left, …

Giving a political colour to Jemimah Rodrigues’ post-match comments robs the country of savouring a famous victory to the fullest

Giving a political colour to Jemimah Rodrigues’ post-match comments robs the country of savouring a famous victory to the fullest

Here is the first line on the acknowledgments page of my novel A Time Outside This Time: “In a 2017 article on behavioural science in The New Yorker, I read that grocers had learned that they could sell double the amount of soup if they placed a sign above their cans reading ‘12 PER PERSON’.”  The sign used by the grocers is a part of a phenomenon that psychologists call “anchoring,” and an aspect of anchoring is what is called “priming”. The associative mechanism in our thinking — let’s say, if someone says, “train travel in India” and I think immediately of Shah Rukh Khan and Malaika Arora dancing atop a moving train — gives us insight into our memories and ideologies. Associative thinking is of interest because it shows us that the behaviour of individuals and groups can be primed by events as well as messaging and propaganda; equally significantly, priming explains how our unconscious biases affect our thinking that we would otherwise consider independent or rational.  In A Time Outside This Time, my …

Starting tomorrow, 2 ROBs in Vadodara to be closed for commuters | Ahmedabad News

The Vadodara City Police Thursday notified the closure of two major Railway Overbridges (ROB) for at least a month, beginning Saturday, to undertake the repair work, said an official notification. The Jetalpur bridge and a part of the Lalbaug bridge — connecting Pratapnagar to Vishwamitri — will remain closed to vehicular traffic until February 17. According to the government notification issued Thursday, the road closures had “become necessary to allow the mastic resurfacing work” to be undertaken by the Vadodara Municipal Corporation.  The mastic resurfacing work is the process of repairing cracks and potholes and restoring roads using a hot-poured liquid asphalt. Although the notification states that the bridges will remain closed until February 17, the period of closure “could be revised” based on the completion of the work. The Vadodara City Traffic Police also provided alternate roads to motorists instead of the two bridges that connect major roads. While Jetalpur bridge connects Sayajigunj to Akota and Alkapuri, the Lalbaug bridge —with four exit points — connects Vishwamitri, Rajmahal road, Pratapnagar and Manjalpur. According to …

Telangana Thief Robs Liquor Shop, Drinks On The Job, Gets Arrested

Telangana Thief Robs Liquor Shop, Drinks On The Job, Gets Arrested

Hyderabad: A thief broke into a liquor shop in Telangana after carefully removing roof tiles, disabled CCTV cameras, collected cash from the drawers, and packed the loot. Everything was going according to plan. But this thief, like most protagonists in William Shakespeare’s tragedies, had a tragic flaw: he liked his drink, and that proved to be his undoing. Overjoyed with his big loot ahead of New Year’s Day, the thief must have thought this calls for a celebration. He had a drink, then another and then a few more. At some point, he passed out and was discovered by the shop’s staff the next morning. Cash and liquor bottles were scattered around him. There was a small injury mark on his face that he may have got during the robbery. Narsing, the in-charge of Kanakadurga Wines in Medak district, was among those who found the blissfully drunk thief on Monday morning. “We shut shop at 10 pm on Sunday. When we opened at 10 am the next morning, we saw him lying unconscious. He had …
