Along with the 6.1909 hectares of forest land in Shimla, the Himachal Pradesh government is also in the process of handing over 2.7427 hectares of non-forest land for the 13.73 km-long Shimla ropeway. The Rs. 1,743.40 crore rapid ropeway system is among northern India’s most ambitious urban mobility projects. The forest as well as the non-forest land will be transferred to the Ropeway and Rapid Transport System Development Corporation (RTDC). The non-forest land comprises trees and shrubs scattered across small pockets, mostly in urban parts of Shimla. Authorities are yet to count the number of trees standing on the non-forest land. Shima is set to construct Asia’s longest ropeway project spanning 13.79 kilometers, in a bid to boost tourism and alleviate traffic congestion in the popular hill station. The Tara Devi-Shimla Ropeway Project, which has already begun, is being undertaken at a cost of Rs 1,734.40 crore by the Ropeway and Rapid Transport System Development Corporation, under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model with the Himachal Pradesh government. It will also be the world’s second largest ropeway. The ropeway, will run between Maa Tara Devi and Sanjauli, covering an area of approximately 60 kilometers, and connect 15 key stations across Shimla and nearby areas. Roughly 2,000 people will be allowed to travel from both directions every hour. It will comprise 660 cabins, each having a carrying capacity of 8-10 passengers. The cabins will arrive at the stations every two to three minutes. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday approved two ropeway projects to cut down travel time to the two pilgrimage sites of Kedarnath and Hemkund Sahib in Uttarakhand. The Union Cabinet also approved the revision of the Livestock Health and Disease Control Programme (LHDCP) on Wednesday, to ensure saturation vaccination to prevent and control livestock diseases, step up surveillance, and upgrade healthcare facilities. Both ropeway projects approved on Wednesday will be implemented under the National Ropeways Development Programme – Parvatmala Pariyojana, Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting, said while briefing the media on the Cabinet decisions. While briefing the media about the Cabinet decisions, Vaishnaw said that the 12.9 km Kedarnath Ropeway project will cost Rs over 4,081 crore, while the 12.4 km Hemkund Sahib ropeway project will cost Rs 2,730 crore. Kedarnath Ropeway project Vaishnaw said that the Kedarnath ropeway project connecting the sacred Kedarnath to Sonprayag will cost Rs 4,081 crore and will be part of the Parvatmala Programme. Vaishnaw said, “The Cabinet has approved the development of the 12.9 km long ropeway project from Sonprayag to Kedarnath in Uttarakhand under National Ropeways Development Programme – Parvatmala Pariyojana.
