A major mishap was narrowly avoided on Friday after a newly constructed ropeway collapsed during a trial run in Bihar’s Rohtas district, officials said, adding that no casualties were reported.

The incident occurred when the ropeway connecting Rohtas block with Rohtasgarh Fort and Rohiteshwar Dham gave way during testing. An attached tower also collapsed in the process, officials confirmed.

Four trolleys being used as part of the trial were damaged, but workers present at the site managed to move to safety, preventing any injuries. The incident has raised concerns over the quality and safety standards of the construction.

Speaking to reporters, Khursheed Karim, a senior engineer with Bihar Rajya Pul Nirman Nigam Limited, said the ropeway was undergoing trial and testing.

“While increasing the load during the test, a wire got stuck, which led to the damage,” he said.

Karim added that significant work on the project is still pending and is being carried out in phases. He also said that a technical team from Kolkata has been called in to investigate the incident.

“The ropeway service will not be opened to the general public until we are fully satisfied with the trial results and safety checks,” he said.
