US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor on Wednesday congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi after he became India`s longest-serving elected Prime Minister, describing the milestone as a reflection of his long political career and years of public service.
In a message posted on social media, Gor said, “Congratulations to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on becoming India`s longest-serving elected Prime Minister. This achievement is a powerful testament to his decades of dedicated public service and leadership. Wishing him all the best.”
Modi surpasses Nehru`s elected tenure record
Prime Minister Modi achieved the milestone on Wednesday after completing 4,399 days in office as an elected Prime Minister, surpassing the record held by India`s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.
The comparison is based on Nehru`s tenure from 1952 onwards, following India`s first general elections. Nehru had served as head of the interim government between 1947 and 1952 before the country established its first elected government.
Modi first took office in May 2014 and has since led the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) through three consecutive Lok Sabha election victories in 2014, 2019 and 2024.
Longest continuously serving elected Prime Minister
While former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi spent more than 14 years in office overall, her tenure was interrupted by a period out of power. As a result, Modi now holds the distinction of being India`s longest continuously serving elected Prime Minister.
His uninterrupted tenure spans more than a decade and includes three successive mandates from voters, a feat achieved by only a handful of leaders in India`s political history.
Political analysts view the milestone as significant given the scale of electoral support the BJP has maintained across multiple election cycles, despite changing political and economic circumstances.
Major projects launched during Modi`s tenure
During the past 12 years, the Modi government has overseen several major infrastructure and development initiatives across the country.
Among the prominent projects completed or launched during this period are the new Parliament building, the Central Vista redevelopment project, Kartavya Path, the expansion of the Vande Bharat train network, the Statue of Unity, the commissioning of INS Vikrant, the Kashmir rail link project, Noida International Airport, the Namo Bharat Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), and the Ganga Expressway.
The government has presented these projects as part of its broader agenda to modernise infrastructure, strengthen connectivity and support economic growth.
NDA leaders gather in Delhi to mark the occasion
The milestone coincides with the completion of 12 years of the NDA government at the Centre. To mark the occasion, the alliance is scheduled to hold a meeting in New Delhi on Wednesday.
The gathering at Bharat Mandapam is expected to be attended by Prime Minister Modi, senior BJP leaders, chief ministers and deputy chief ministers from NDA-ruled states and Union Territories, along with leaders of alliance partners.
According to IANS, the NDA is likely to adopt a resolution congratulating Modi on surpassing Nehru`s record and acknowledging his tenure as the country`s longest-serving elected Prime Minister.
Meeting to focus on governance and future priorities
Senior Union ministers, including Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, J.P. Nadda and Shivraj Singh Chouhan, are expected to participate in the meeting alongside other key NDA leaders.
Apart from commemorating the political milestone, discussions are expected to focus on governance initiatives, development programmes and the alliance`s future policy agenda. Leaders are also likely to review preparations for upcoming elections and discuss strategies for addressing political and governance challenges in the years ahead.
The meeting comes at a time when the NDA government is entering its third consecutive term and seeking to outline its priorities for the next phase of governance.
