SEC to ask Kerala govt. to examine whether postal ballot facility can be expanded in future local body polls

The State Election Commission (SEC) is planning to ask the Kerala government to examine whether the postal ballot facility can be extended to more voter categories in future local body elections. At present, only election officials are eligible for postal ballots in the local body polls conducted by the SEC. However, there have been widespread demands this election season that more categories be included. State Election Commissioner A. Shajahan told The Hindu that the SEC is thinking of making a recommendation to the State government in this regard once the 2025 local body polls—to be held on December 9 and 11 in two phases— are over. For the introduction of such a reform, amendments will be required to the Kerala Panchayat Raj Act and the Kerala Municipalities Act. “The Election Commission of India (EC) has made various categories eligible for postal ballots in line with the amendments to the Representation of the People Act. The draft lists were published on November 20, and the current deadline for objections is November 27.  In a joint letter sent to the SEC, Congress state president Harshavardhan Sapkal, Congress Legislature Party leader Vijay Wadettiwar, and Legislative Council group leader Satej alias Bunty Patil stated that in many municipal corporations, the draft voter lists have not been properly divided ward-wise. The Supreme Court on Tuesday adjourned the hearing in the Maharashtra local body elections matter to November 28 after the state government requested more time, stating that it was holding discussions with the State Election Commission (SEC) regarding the 50 per cent ceiling on reservations, reported the IANS. A Bench comprising Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi was informed by the SEC that elections for 246 municipal councils and 42 nagar panchayats have already been notified for December 2, and that in several of the local bodies heading for polls, the reservation limit of 50 per cent has been exceeded, according to the IANS. The SEC further informed the court that elections for zila parishads, municipal corporations and panchayat samitis have not yet been notified. Taking note of these details, the CJI observed that the excess reservation in the 57 local bodies would remain subject to the outcome of the proceedings currently before the Supreme Court. In a letter to the SEC, signed by State Congress president Harshwardhan Sapkal, leaders Vijay Wadettiwar and Satej Patil, the party said the draft voters list was published on November 20. The SEC also gave a deadline till November 27 to submit objections and suggestions. “Many voters are not in the draft list of wards they reside in and the situation is different in all municipal corporations of the State. This is a large number,” the letter said. “Even the process of taking objections in the electoral rolls is very complicated and every person who has an issue with the voters’ list has to make an application about their grievance,” it said. US DoJ Said to Open Probe Into Coinbase Data Breach, Firm Claims Involvement of Indian Employees

Coinbase was recently impacted by a data breach, and the crypto firm is now working with US law enforcement agencies to identify the cybercriminals behind the attack. The exchange has reportedly claimed that its contractors and employees who were bribed to leak userdata to the criminals were from India. The US Department of Justice (DoJ) has now joined the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in the ongoing investigation. Coinbase has clarified that the exchange itself is not under probe, which is focused on finding the cyber criminals involved in executing the attack. DoJ’s criminal division officials are probing the breach that affected the crypto firm, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday. Coinbase reportedly stated that employees in India provided the cybercriminals with user data access. International law enforcement agencies have also been roped into the probe. As per Coinbase, the employees it identified as being involved in the case were fired immediately. The firm has yet to disclose the credentials of these former Coinbase employees. The US is moving towards getting a comprehensive set of Web3 rules under the crypto-friendly presidency of Donald Trump. The US Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) Crypto Task Force said Monday it would host a series of roundtable meetings to gather public insights on its regulatory approach towards Web3. Mark T. Uyeda, the acting chairperson of the SEC, will oversee the roundtable discussions that will start this month. The inaugural session of the roundtable series, dubbed the ‘Spring Sprint Toward Crypto Clarity’, has been slated for March 21 at the SEC office in Washington DC. The first session will hold discussions on defining the status of cryptocurrencies as securities. “The initial roundtable on March 21 is open to the public at the SEC’s headquarters. The number of in-person participants may be limited. The primary discussion will be streamed live on SEC.gov, and a recording will be posted at a later date,” the federal agency explained.
