West Asia conflict hits Surat textile industry, output drops sharply

Gujarat`s textile hub in Surat has started feeling the pinch of rising input costs due to the ongoing West Asia conflict, with several units either curtailing their daily working hours or bringing down their active production days. Some office-bearers claimed that the industry was currently facing losses of around Rs 100 crore every day. Surat city is among India`s largest centres for man-made fabric production. The South Gujarat Textile Processors Association has decided to limit the operational days of units to five days a week instead of seven in a bid to manage rising costs, its president Jitendra Vaktania said. “Due to rising costs of raw materials and coal, the textile processing industry in Surat and South Gujarat is facing a crisis,” he said. Several units have also scaled down production cycles from 24 hours to 12 hours a day, impacting overall output, said Ashok Jirawala, president of the Federation of Gujarat Weavers` Welfare Association and vice-president of the Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry. “The situation has become challenging, with the industry incurring …

With cost of inputs rising and exports disrupted, textile units in Perambalur take a hit

Textile manufacturing units in Perambalur district are facing a mounting pressure as raw material prices continue to surge amid the ongoing conflict in West Asia, triggering concerns over production cuts and financial strain. Industry sources said the prices of key raw materials such as polyester fibre and synthetic yarn, largely derived from petroleum products, have increased sharply in recent weeks. The surge is linked to disruptions in crude oil supply and shipping routes in the Gulf region. It is said that polyester fibre prices alone have climbed steeply, with similar trends seen across other synthetic fibres used in textile production. The situation has been worsened by delays in imports and escalating freight charges, making it increasingly difficult for small and medium-scale units to sustain operations. According to C. Balakrishnan, merchandiser of a Karur-based textile company, raw material costs, particularly dyes, have increased by 15% to 30%. Polyester prices have risen by around ₹40 a kg. The prices of other essential inputs, including elastic and packaging materials, have escalated sharply. He added that unit owners are …

‘Picture unclear’: US tariff cut draws cautious response from Bhiwandi’s textile market | Mumbai News

3 min readMumbaiFeb 4, 2026 11:00 PM IST Even as the US has agreed to reduce tariffs on Indian goods from 50 per cent to 18 per cent, reactions from Bhiwandi’s textile market have been cautious, with powerloom owners saying the cut still leaves duties well above earlier levels and the impact on their business remains uncertain. Bhiwandi was a thriving powerloom hub with a report from the National Institute for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (NI-MSME) stating that as many as 12 lakh powerlooms alone were situated in Bhiwandi with its industry’s turnover estimated at Rs 10,000 crore annually. Having transitioned from traditional handlooms, the powerlooms in Bhiwandi spin yarn to churn out raw material, known as grey cloth in local parlance, which is later sent across merchants and centres for finished textile products. However, in the recent past, the total number of powerlooms in Bhiwandi has dwindled below 4 lakh owing to the blows dealt to the unorganised industry by demonetisation, followed by immediate implementation of GST and high power tariffs. The sharp …

EU FTA impact: Auto stocks slump, but textile companies climb | Business News

Shares of Indian automakers slid sharply on Tuesday as India and the European Union (EU) announced the finalisation of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) that will see auto manufacturers from the 27-nation bloc facing a sharp reduction in tariffs while entering India, potentially posing hurdles for domestic carmakers. Shares of major automakers closed 1-4% lower compared to Monday, with the Nifty Auto index ending down 0.9%. Hyundai Motor India closed 4% lower, while Maruti Suzuki India settled 1.4% down after falling as much as 2.9%. Mahindra & Mahindra closed 4.2% lower after falling 5.6% intraday. The manufacturer has a large portion of SUVs in its portfolio, and they are seen facing the biggest impact from the EU FTA as cars in the segment are priced around the minimum import price limit. “The impact (from the trade deal) is likely to be around 3-4% of volume for M&M and around 1-2% maybe for smaller players (in the SUV segment) like Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors,” an analyst tracking the sector at a domestic brokerage said.
