Wes Anderson’s upcoming film, The Phoenician Scheme, is a dark espionage drama that revolves around a father-daughter relationship entangled in the complexities of a family business. The film is set for an early limited release on May 30 before hitting theatres worldwide on June 6, Variety reported.
Benicio del Toro leads the cast as Zsa-zsa Korda, one of Europe’s wealthiest men, while Mia Threapleton plays his daughter. Michael Cera takes on the role of her tutor. The film boasts a star-studded ensemble that features Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Bryan Cranston, Riz Ahmed, Mathieu Amalric, Jeffrey Wright, Richard Ayoade, Rupert Friend and Hope Davis.
Anderson has co-written the screenplay with Roman Coppola, a frequent collaborator. The film was shot in Germany with assistance from Studio Babelsberg. Anderson also produced The Phoenician Scheme under his American Empirical Pictures banner alongside longtime partners Steven Rales of Indian Paintbrush, Jeremy Dawson and John Peet.
In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter last year, Anderson talked about his latest project, noting that many familiar faces returned to work with him. “This film I just finished making in Germany, there must be a hundred people on the film who have worked with me on other films. It could be more who come back – and lots of cast members,” he said.
Speaking about his filmmaking approach, he admitted that new members on his sets often find his working style strange. “It’s not necessarily the way movies are normally made. Probably every director is like that. We have our own strange methods, which began in some ways with the first film I made,” he explained.
Focus Features has acquired the rights for domestic distribution of The Phoenician Scheme which marks yet another collaboration between the studio and Anderson. Universal Pictures, the parent company of Focus, will be responsible for international distribution. Focus has previously handled releases for Asteroid City and Moonrise Kingdom. Asteroid City earned $53.8 million at box office while Moonrise Kingdom earned $68.3 million and was also nominated for an Oscar for its screenplay.
Anderson has long been known for his distinctive storytelling and signature visual style which have made his films like The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Royal Tenenbaums and Rushmore both critically acclaimed and widely loved. His most recent success, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, won the Oscar for Best Live Action Short Film.
