Anushka Sharma once revealed her reasons for declining Tamasha, despite Imtiaz Ali’s reputation for bringing out the best in his actors.
Anushka Sharma opened up about her decision to turn down Imtiaz Ali’s Tamasha, a role that eventually went to Deepika Padukone.
Tamasha, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone, is celebrated as one of Bollywood’s most beloved films. Interestingly, Anushka Sharma was originally considered for the lead role in Imtiaz Ali’s directorial. Reflecting on her decision, Anushka once shared that she believed an Imtiaz Ali film could have brought her praise, given his reputation as a skilled director.
In a 2016 interaction with ANI, Anushka was asked if she regretted turning down Tamasha. She candidly explained that she had declined the role because the storyline heavily focused on the male protagonist, played by Ranbir Kapoor.
Although she hadn’t watched the film, Anushka confidently noted that she would have been appreciated if she had taken on the project. “I have no doubt that if I did the film, I would be praised. Any actor in an Imtiaz Ali film will always be good for he is a good director and is very good with his actors,” said Anushka.
Earlier this year, Imtiaz Ali suggested an alternate ending for the film, offering a fresh perspective on how the story of Tara (Deepika Padukone) and Ved (Ranbir Kapoor) could have unfolded. According to Imtiaz, Tara and Ved might not have ended up together, but Tara would still have remained Ved’s muse.
Imtiaz explained that he had thought of this alternative a bit late. In this version, Tara would attend Ved’s shows without him knowing. However, as per the film’s original ending, “they would be doing shows together.”
Released in 2015, Tamasha tells the story of Ved Vardhan Sahni (Ranbir Kapoor), a young man captivated by storytelling and drama. During a solo trip to Corsica, he meets Tara Maheshwari (Deepika Padukone), and they form a unique and deep connection.
Ranbir and Deepika have previously collaborated on films like Bachna Ae Haseeno and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani.
Currently, both Anushka and Deepika are enjoying motherhood. Meanwhile, Ranbir is set to appear in Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana alongside Sai Pallavi. He also has Love & War, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and co-starring Vicky Kaushal and Alia Bhatt, lined up in his schedule.
