Zeenat Aman recently revealed that the iconic song ‘Laila O Laila’ wasn’t originally created for the 1980 blockbuster Qurbani.

Zeenat Aman and Feroz Khan’s legendary track ‘Laila O Laila’ remains an unforgettable highlight of their storied careers. However, during a recent appearance on the singing reality show Indian Idol, Zeenat revealed an intriguing backstory about the song. To the surprise of many, the iconic number wasn’t initially created for their 1980 blockbuster Qurbani but for a completely different project.
In a clip shared by Sony TV’s official Instagram, Zeenat recounted the song’s journey to Qurbani while speaking to a contestant who likely performed the classic tune. She explained, “When ‘Laila O Laila’ was picturised…it was the first shooting stint that I did with Feroz sahab and it wasn’t for the film Qurbani. It was for a film called Kasak. We shot for this song with a lot of love and hard work and passion. Later, Feroz Khan sahab decided that he doesn’t want to make that film (Kasak) and the whole song was lifted and used in Qurbani.”
Zeenat also shared insights about her working relationship with Feroz Khan in an earlier Instagram post, reminiscing about their initial collaboration in the 1970s. Their equation wasn’t always smooth, as Zeenat once declined a minor role in one of Feroz’s films. However, destiny had other plans, and she was later cast as the lead in Qurbani. Despite some early hurdles, including an incident where Feroz docked her pay for being late to set after partying all night, the two developed a strong professional bond.
Recalling the episode, Zeenat wrote, “…I landed up one hour late to set. Feroz was glowering behind his camera, and before I could offer him my meagre excuse, he cut me down to size. ‘Begum, you’re late and you’re going to pay for the delay.’ No argument, no scolding, but you can be sure that he docked my pay to pay the crew for that one hour delay,” she wrote. She later described Feroz as “suave, charming and polished.”
Directed and produced by Feroz Khan, who also played the lead role, Qurbani became the highest-grossing film of 1980. The film’s star-studded cast included Vinod Khanna, Amjad Khan, Shakti Kapoor, Aruna Irani, Amrish Puri, and Kader Khan, making it a true musical and cinematic extravaganza.
