Parents and students, along with the district unit of All India Democratic Students Organisation (AIDSO), staged a protest in front of a government primary school at Sangolgi (C) village in Aland taluk of Kalaburagi district, in Karnataka, on June 15, demanding immediate safety measures and construction of a new school building after a portion of the ceiling plaster of a classroom collapsed on June 14.
AIDSO district vice-president Govind Yalawar said that 204 students are enrolled in the school, which serves children from economically weaker families, including farmers and labourers, in the region. He said the collapse of the ceiling had created panic among parents and students. He accused authorities of negligence in maintaining school infrastructure.
AIDSO district secretary Venkatesh Deodurg alleged that students were now studying in unsafe conditions, and demanded that the government take the incident seriously. He urged the Education Department and the government of Karnataka to ensure immediate safety measures, including demolition of the old and unsafe structure, and construction of a new and well-equipped school building with all basic facilities.
The parents and students submitted a memorandum to the Block Education Officer and to Kalaburagi Rural MLA Basavaraj Mattimod, seeking urgent intervention.
