Shark Tank India Season 4 recently saw an entrepreneur pitching his men’s make-up brand to the ‘sharks’ on the show who questioned his “mardo ke liye make-up” products. Rahul Shah from Ahmedabad presented his brand Yaan Man as he sought Rs 50 lakh in exchange of 6 percent equity in the business. A cosmetic chemist by education, Rahul said that it was his mission to get rid of the taboo against men’s make-up in India.
Vineeta Singh, who is the founder of SUGAR, found it an “interesting niche” as she observed that it was very difficult to get men to use these products. Anupam claimed that he doesn’t even use any make-up when he appears on the television show and Aman instantly called out his “jhooth (lie)”. As Anupam inspected his products, he found the packaging “appealing from a masculine standpoint” and also appreciated the 90-second make-up demo by Rahul.
Namita then raised that the reason why men, perhaps, stay away from make-up products is because it is largely believed that “gay men put make up” as it is a “culture and community thing” for them. Vineeta was quick to ask, “Is it?” and immediately shook her head discarding Namita’s claims. Aman insisted that no one around him uses any make-up because there is “no acceptability” for men using these products. Peyush Bansal found him to be a “charming” chemist but felt that he lacked conviction to make this a into a grand business.
Aman, who did not seem interested in the business throughout, was the first to present an offer of Rs 50 lakh for 10 percent of the business. Anupam found the founder “trustworthy” and gave an offer of Rs 50 lakh for 9 percent of the company. Rahul asked them to join hands and after much deliberation, they ultimately agreed. This led to some laughs on the panel as Aman and Anupam famously don’t get along on the show. As the pitcher asked them to “figure out” their differences, the ‘sharks’ presented a deal of Rs 1 crore for 20 percent of the business, which was accepted by Rahul.
