The Mumbai police Crime Branch completed its probe into the murder of former Maharashtra minister and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Baba Siddique and filed a chargesheet against 26 people, including Anmol Bishnoi, brother of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, on Monday. The police investigation concluded that the Bishnoi gang plotted the murder to establish their dominance in Mumbai.
An officer said they filed a 4,590-page chargesheet in the Special Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) court. The chargesheet named three people – Shubham Lonkar, Yasin Siddique, and Anmol Bishnoi – as the accused in the case. The US immigration authorities detained Bishnoi on charges of using a forged passport, and he is currently in their custody.
Siddique was gunned down on October 12 in Bandra East outside the office of his son Zeeshan Akhtar. While two men were arrested from the spot, the main shooter fled from the scene of the crime and was eventually arrested later by the Crime Branch. The police made 26 arrests in the case.
The police chargesheet said the accused chose Siddique as a target on claims that he was close to actor Salman Khan, who has been on the radar of the gang for allegedly shooting a black buck considered holy by the Bishnoi community. Apart from that, the chargesheet said the accused chose Siddique because they thought he was close to the Dawood Ibrahim gang.
The Crime Branch found no evidence on claims that Siddique was murdered on account of some dispute over Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) projects in the city.
A police officer said, “The investigation revealed that the shooting was orchestrated by Anmol Singh Bishnoi, a key member of an organised crime gang. The accused are believed to have conspired to establish the dominance of their criminal operations, using violence and terror to further their goals.”
