A 49-year-old Chinese national was arrested on Monday at the Rupaidiha checkpost along the India–Nepal border in Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich district after he allegedly entered India illegally and was found videographing sensitive border locations, the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) said.
Officials identified the man as Liu Qunjing, a resident of China’s Hunan province. SSB commandant Ganga Singh Udavat told PTI that Qunjing had crossed into India from Nepal and was caught filming restricted areas near the border. Pakistani, Chinese and Nepalese currencies were recovered from him, along with three mobile phones, one of which contained videos of several sensitive sites inside Indian territory.
Qunjing did not possess valid documents permitting entry into India, officials said. A map of Nepal written entirely in English was found in his possession, but he claimed through gestures that he knew neither Hindi nor English, prompting investigators to question his responses. The SSB, local police and other security agencies interrogated him with the help of an interpreter.
During questioning, agencies learned that Qunjing had previously travelled to Pakistan on a valid visa. His movement across multiple countries, illegal entry into India, videography of sensitive zones and inconsistencies during interrogation have led authorities to treat him as a suspect, officials said.
The Chinese citizen has been handed over to the police, who have registered a case under relevant sections of the Foreigners Act at the Rupaidiha police station. Initial inquiries suggest he entered Nepal on November 15 on a tourist visa, reached Nepalgunj on November 22 and crossed into India illegally on November 24.
