The union finance ministry has approved the home ministry’s proposal to provide additional allowances to Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel deployed in VVIP security. However, the approval comes with limitations.
According to a senior official, while the original proposal aimed to cover all security personnel involved in VVIP security, the finance ministry’s expenditure department has approved it with restrictions.
An official communication, issued with the approval of the competent authority, states, “The proposal from the MHA to grant Special Security Allowance (SSA) at 20% of the basic pay to CAPF personnel engaged in VIP security duties has been examined by this Department and is approved only for CAPF personnel engaged in VIP security duties for Z+ and Z+ (ASL) category protectees, where SPG and NSG are replaced by CAPF.”
This decision means that only the security personnel protecting the Gandhi family will receive the special allowance, as their security was recently transferred from the SPG to the CRPF.
A query has been sent to expenditure secretary Manoj Govil, and a response is awaited.
Sources indicate that the process of transferring protectees from the NSG to CAPF security cover has not yet commenced. The union defence minister and the Uttar Pradesh chief minister, among other protectees, currently remain under NSG cover.
“The order states that the allowance will be given to those on security duties for Z+ and Z+ (ASL) protectees, where SPG and NSG are replaced by CAPF. Only officials protecting the Gandhi family will fall under this category. Additionally, there is no fixed duty for any personnel, as we operate on a rotational basis, so very few personnel will receive this benefit. Whenever any protectee travels to some state, the local VVIP security unit provides security, and there are no fixed duties,” a senior CAPF official supervising VVIP security told News18.
Furthermore, CISF and ITBP personnel, primarily responsible for protecting high-risk individuals in the X and Y categories, will not be eligible for the allowance.
