Grey’s Anatomy paid a moving tribute to its former star, Eric Dane, in the first episode that aired after his death on February 19 at the age of 53. The ABC medical drama closed the episode with a special video montage honouring the actor, who played the fan-favourite character Mark Sloan, also known as ‘McSteamy.’ The tribute aired at the end of the episode and was set to Tommee Profitt and Fleurie’s rendition of ‘Chasing Cars.’
The montage brought back some of Dane’s most memorable moments on the long-running show.
Remembering Mark Sloan
Viewers were taken back to key scenes that defined Mark Sloan’s journey. Among them was the infamous hotel room moment that shattered Derek and Addison’s marriage. The reel also revisited Derek’s awkward elevator encounter with his past and present significant others, a moment hilariously interrupted by Mark.
Other scenes showed Mark meeting Callie, embracing fatherhood, and eventually walking her down the aisle. The tribute also included Lexie Grey, played by Chyler Leigh, whose love story with Mark remains one of the show’s most emotional arcs.
The montage also featured a line from Mark’s speech to Jackson shortly before his death: “If you love someone, you tell them, even if you’re scared that it’s not the right thing, even if you’re scared that it will burn your life to the ground, you say it, you say it loud.”
A Legacy That Lives On
Eric Dane first appeared on Grey’s Anatomy as a guest star in Season 2 before becoming a series regular in Season 3. His character remained central to the storyline until Season 9 Episode 2, when Mark died from injuries sustained in the Season 8 plane crash, which also claimed Lexie’s life.
The tribute concluded with Mark’s return during the show’s pandemic-themed 2020–21 season. In Meredith Grey’s beach dream sequences while she was in a coma, Mark, along with Lexie, urged her to fight for her life. “Don’t waste one single minute,” he said, before the screen faded to black and white. A final message appeared, “In loving memory of Eric Dane.”
Dane’s connection to the show remains permanent. The hospital in the series carries Mark Sloan’s name, ensuring that his character’s legacy continues. Following his passing, members of the Grey’s cast and crew also paid heartfelt tributes to their former colleague, remembering both the actor and the friend they had lost.
