In a first, a Nihang faction participated in the Shahi Snan (holy dip) alongside the three traditional Sikh akharas at the ongoing Mahakumbh in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj. Nihangs are a distinct warrior order within the Sikh community.
The announcement was made by Jathedar Nihang Baba Harjit Singh Rasulpur of the Nihang Dal known as Misl Shaheedan Nihang Baba Fakir Singh Rasulpur (Ayodhya Wale). He was interacting with mediapersons at the BJP office in Chandigarh on Wednesday afternoon.
Shahi Snan rituals took place on January 14, January 29 and February 3 at the Mahakumbh.
Of the 13 akharas (traditional sects of sadhus), three are tied to Sikhism and have long been associated with the Mahakumbh. These are Udaseen Panchayati Bada Akhara, Udaseen Panchayati Naya Akhara and Nirmal Akhara.
“I participated in five major Sant Sammelans (saints’ convention) and one Dharma Sansad (religious parliament), where I spread the message of Gurbani (the Guru’s words),” Baba Harjit Singh Rasulpur said.
During his month-long stay in Prayagraj, Baba Harjit Singh said he met peethadheeshwars, mahamandaleshwars, jagat gurus, and saints from various sects and traditions across India. He said that he spread the teachings of the ten Sikh Gurus, the Gurbani, and the glorious history of Sikhism during these meetings.
Baba Harjit Singh was in Prayagraj since January 6, organising the Shahi Snan at the Triveni Sangam confluence, he said. Nihang Dal had also set up its Khalsa camp in Prayagraj, he added. He also brought back holy water from the Triveni Sangam.
