The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has condemned an attack on the commercial vessel Settebello off the coast of Oman, describing the incident as deeply concerning amid ongoing tensions in the region.
According to an official statement, the MEA stated that the vessel was attacked earlier on the day, prompting an immediate search and rescue operation involving Oman authorities.
The ministry said that 24 Indian crew members were on board the vessel at the time of the attack. So far, 21 Indians have been rescued, while three crew members are still reported missing.
India`s Embassy in Oman stated that it was closely monitoring the situation and is actively coordinating with local authorities involved in the ongoing search and rescue efforts of the crew members.
Officials said all possible assistance is being provided to ensure the safety and welfare of the affected crew members.
India expresses concern over shipping attacks
The MEA said the continuing attacks on commercial shipping in the region are a matter of serious concern and are linked to the ongoing conflict in the wider Middle East.
The ministry warned that such incidents pose risks not only to seafarers but also to international trade and maritime security.
Call for immediate de-escalation
India reiterated its call for an immediate reduction in regional tensions and urged all parties to pursue diplomatic solutions to the conflict, the statement said.
The MEA said peace and stability in the region are essential to prevent further attacks and ensure the safety of civilians and commercial vessels operating in international waters.
The ministry also stressed that attacks on commercial shipping and civilian infrastructure must stop immediately.
It called for the restoration of free and unhindered navigation through international waterways in accordance with international law, allowing global trade and commerce to continue without disruption, it further said.
Search and rescue efforts continue
As rescue operations continue off the Oman coast, Indian authorities remain in close contact with their counterparts in Oman. Efforts are focused on locating the three missing Indian crew members and ensuring the safe recovery of all those affected by the incident, the officials said.
