The Maharashtra Government has agreed to grant a 2-day emergency parole to gangster and convict in the 1993 Mumbai Blasts Case Abu Salem, to meet his family.
When Salem’s plea seeking 14 days of emergency parole, in view of the death of his brother Abu Hakim Ansari, who died in November last year before the Bombay High Court, Chief Public Prosecutor Mankunwar Deshmukh informed the court that the government has taken a decision to release Salem on an emergency parole for 2 days.
The state government informed a division bench of Justice Ajay Gadkari and Justice Shyam Chandak that since Salem is an “international criminal”, he cannot be released without an escort party.
However, Salem’s lawyer Farhana Shah objected, saying it is not possible to go to Azamgarh from Mumbai and return in two days. Shah also said Salem should be released on parole even without escorts since her client has already spent 25 years in jail. She also said that the charges of the escort party would run into lakhs.
Salem has highlighted that he has been in jail and was only granted parole leaves of a few days after the death of his mother and also of his stepmother.
The matter has been adjourned for a week.
