While several tech giants are laying off their employees, OkCredit’s CEO is garnering praise for the way he handled the situation after the company fired 70 of its employees.
Harsh Pokharna, a Bengaluru-based CEO shared on LinkedIn the story about the time when OkCredit had to let go of 70 employees due to budget restrictions.
Taking to LinkedIn, he explained how the company not only helped the employees find new jobs, but 67 of them got placed at some other companies while serving their notice period. For those three who couldn’t find other jobs, the company gave them 2 months’ extra salary.
“18 months ago, we laid off 70 people. Here’s how it went: We were burning too much. Hired too fast. It was our mistake. And we owned it. It was one of the hardest things I’ve done as a founder. But we tried to do it the right way,” he wrote.
“We gave them 3 months’ notice. Helped with referrals, intros, job leads – anything that could help. 67 got placed before the notice period ended. For the 3 who didn’t, we gave 2 months’ extra salary,” he added further.
He concludes his post with “If you call someone family while hiring them, treat them like family when letting them go too.”
The post going viral has over 2,500 reactions.
How LinkedIn Users Reacted?
Social Media users hailed him for “doing the right thing”.
“Mistakes happen in business, but employees who put their trust in the CEO and the company shouldn’t have to bear the brunt. You did the right thing by supporting them in finding new opportunities. Hats off to you!,” commented one user.
“It’s commendable that you’re being upfront about it, most people only talk about fostering a positive culture,” wrote another.
A third commented, “That is such a mature and respectful way to deal with people. More power to you. Cowardly leaders hide behind their mistakes and put it on employees due to their own incompetence. Real power lies in owning up. The true quality of a leader and founder. Thanks for sharing!”
