Five members of a family were killed after their car crashed into a stationary truck on the Samruddhi Expressway in Maharashtra’s Amravati district, police said on Monday.
The accident occurred near the Dhamangaon railway boundary at around 12.30 pm on Sunday, an official said, reported PTI.
The victims were travelling to Akola to attend a function when their car rammed into a truck parked near the railway boundary.
Victims identified
The deceased have been identified as Bhaskar Jivne, his son Ramesh Jivne, who was driving the car, his wife Lata Jivne, his daughter-in-law Aarti Jivne, and his 10-year-old granddaughter. All were residents of Chandrapur, the official said.
Police, highway safety teams, and rescue personnel rushed to the spot and shifted the bodies to Dhamangaon Rural Hospital for post-mortem examinations.
While the exact cause of the accident is yet to be ascertained, a preliminary investigation suggests that the driver may have dozed off at the wheel, leading to the fatal collision, the official added.
Two Mumbai trekkers killed, 19 injured after bus plunges into gorge at Pabe Ghat
Meanwhile, two trekkers from Mumbai lost their lives, while 19 others, including the driver, were injured after a bus carrying a group of trekkers plunged into a gorge at Pabe Ghat near Rajgad Fort in Pune district during the early hours of June 28, police said.
The group, comprising 22 employees of a private company based in the SEEPZ Special Economic Zone in Andheri East, was travelling to Rajgad Fort for a weekend trek when the accident occurred.
Bus loses control at sharp bend
According to police, the accident took place at around 1 am when the bus reportedly lost control while negotiating a sharp bend at Pabe Ghat before veering off the road into a gorge.
Police, rescue teams and local residents immediately launched a rescue operation. A JCB machine was used to pull the bus out of the gorge, while the injured were shifted to Velhe Rural Hospital for treatment.
Officials said two passengers died on the spot, while the remaining 19 sustained injuries. Their condition is being monitored, and police have launched an investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the accident.
Residents raise road safety concerns
Following the tragedy, residents once again highlighted the poor safety infrastructure along the Rajgad route. They alleged that despite funds being sanctioned for installing crash barriers at accident-prone stretches such as Pabe Ghat and Kadve Ghat, the work has remained incomplete.
