Sheena Bora murder: Witness was picked up by police 3 days before he was shown arrested, says retired cop | Mumbai News

In the Sheena Bora murder case, a retired police officer told the court that approver-turned-witness Shyamvar Rai was picked up by the police on August 19, 2015, three days before he was shown arrested for allegedly carrying a gun, which eventually led to the revelation that Sheena was murdered in 2012.

Sheena, the elder daughter of former media executive Indrani Mukerjea, was allegedly murdered on April 24, 2012. The Khar Police claimed that the crime came to light over three years later, when Indrani’s former driver Rai was arrested on August 21, 2015, at Khar, while in the possession of a firearm. During his interrogation, he disclosed his involvement in Sheena’s murder in 2012 along with Indrani and the other accused.

“I cannot state any reason why Shyamvar Rai was not produced before any magistrate for three days from August 19, 2015,” the witness told the court during his cross-examination on Monday, Indrani’s lawyer, Ranjeet Sangle. So far, other witnesses, including Rai in his deposition, and other Khar policemen, have told the court that Rai was arrested on August 21, 2015.

Dattatray Bhargude, was senior police inspector attached to the Khar police station at the time of the arrest of Rai and Indrani. He told the court that he only had a supervisory role and very limited role in the probe. He told the court that he had got information that inspector Dinesh Kadam and sub-inspector Ganesh Dalvi had caught one person with an illegal firearm and during his interrogation, the accused had revealed about a murder which took place in 2012. The probe of the case was handed over to Kadam, the witness told the court.

When asked about the details of who were the police officers who picked up Rai on August 19, 2015, the witness said that he was not aware of the same. He added that he cannot state the exact location of the arrest either. Bhargude was also asked about the delay in filing an FIR on August 21, 2015, when the accused was arrested on August 19, 2015, to which he said that he did not know why.

Sangle also asked him if then commissioner of police Rakesh Maria had got a personal call in July 2015, tipping him off about the alleged murder and if he had done any investigation about it. The witness said that he was not aware of it.

Indrani and her former husbands Sanjeev Khanna and Peter Mukerjea are currently facing trial for the murder of Sheena. So far, 100 witnesses have been examined with another Khar policeman’s deposition partly recorded on Tuesday.
