People staged a protest outside the Delhi High Court against the suspension of the jail term of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kuldeep Singh Sengar in the Unnao rape case.

During the protest, the victim’s mother said the bail should be rejected and emphasised that she would approach the Supreme Court for justice, expressing loss of faith in the High Court’s verdict.

“His bail should be rejected… We will knock on the doors of the Supreme Court. We have lost faith in the High Court… If we don’t get justice in the Supreme Court, we will go to another country… The person guilty of my husband’s murder should be hanged immediately,” she told ANI.

Meanwhile, the police warned the protesters, saying, “Demonstrating here is prohibited and illegal. Legal action may be taken against you after five minutes. If you want to protest, go to Jantar Mantar.”

Women activist Yogita Bhayana told reporters that they approached the Delhi High Court peacefully to demand justice for the Unnao rape victim and urged that their petition be heard, adding that they will protest if justice is not served.

The protests come amid concerns expressed by the Unnao rape survivor and her family over the suspension of Sengar’s jail term. Accompanied by her mother and Yogita Bhayana, the survivor had also staged a protest at Delhi’s India Gate on December 23.

Post the Delhi High Court’s judgement, the victim expressed her concern over the same. At the same time, she expressed her faith in the Supreme Court.

Kuldeep Sengar was given a life sentence in December 2019 for having raped a 17-year-old girl in Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao in 2017. However, the Delhi High Court, on Tuesday, granted the expelled BJP leader a conditional bail, stating that he had already served more than the maximum punishment under the POCSO Act. He has been granted relief on the condition that he furnish a bail bond of Rs 15 lakh. He shall not contact the victim’s family members.

However, Sengar will remain in custody as he has not yet been granted bail in the victim’s father’s custodial death matter. An appeal and application for suspension of sentence is pending before the HC. He was awarded a 10-year sentence in that case.

Congress leader Mumtaz Patel has also criticised the Delhi HC’s decision, calling it a “huge setback” and said that the ruling undermines the confidence of women across the country.

“This is a huge setback, the way the High Court has given Sengar a free pass on a technicality. This is setting a very bad precedent in the country… How much their confidence must have been shattered by this ruling. Not just theirs, but that of women across the country,” she added.
