At least six people lost their lives, and several others sustained injuries after a private sleeper bus rammed into a trailer truck on the Barmer–Jodhpur National Highway in Rajasthan on Friday.

The accident took place near the Barmer district, causing panic among passengers and bystanders. Police and emergency teams rushed to the spot shortly after receiving information and launched rescue operations.

The injured passengers were shifted to Nahata Hospital in Balotra for treatment. Officials said the condition of some of the injured is critical, raising fears that the death toll may increase.

Visuals from the site showed the right side of the sleeper bus completely mangled due to the impact. Residents were seen assisting authorities in pulling out trapped passengers and transporting the injured to medical facilities.

Police have initiated an investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the crash. Preliminary reports suggest a high-impact collision, though it remains unclear whether overspeeding, driver fatigue, or poor visibility contributed to the accident.

The tragedy comes weeks after a similar incident in the state. Last month, at least four people were killed, and more than 15 were injured when a bus returning from a pilgrimage collided head-on with a trailer truck on the Jodhpur–Jaisalmer highway. The bus, carrying around 20 passengers, was on its way back from the Baba Ramdev shrine in Ramdeora, Jaisalmer district.

Authorities have urged drivers to exercise caution on national highways, especially during long-distance night travel, as investigations into Friday’s crash continue.
