STAT OF THE DAY: Abhishek Sharma equals fastest Indian T20 hundred in 28 balls, breaks Suryakumar Yadav’s calendar year Indian T20 sixes record | Cricket News

Punjab opener Abhishek Sharma smashed a blistering 28-ball hundred against Meghalaya to equal the fastest century by an Indian in the final group-stage round of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

The ton was Abhishek’s fourth SMAT hundred in only 48 balls, the most for any batter in the history of the domestic T20 tournament. Abhishek’s scorching knock in a 143-run chase against Meghalaya equalled Gujarat opener Urvil Patel’s 28-ball ton against Tripura last week, the duo standing second on the all-time list only behind Sahil Chauhan’s 27-ball century for Estonia earlier this year.

Abhishek smacked 11 sixes as Punjab chased down the target in only 9.3 overs for seven wickets to spare. The left-hander thereby broke Suryakumar Yadav’s record for most T20 sixes by an Indian in a calendar year. While India’s T20I captain smashed 85 sixes in 41 innings 2022, Abhishek leapfrogged his India teammate, taking his tally to 86 sixes in only 38 innings this year.
