Women’s doubles duo of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand produced a fine comeback against third seeds Benyapa Aimsaard and Nuntakarn Aimsaard of Thailand to reach the final of Syed Modi India International. The Indians prevailed in the semifinals 18-21 21-18 21-10 in 63 minutes.
After dropping a tough opening game, the two pairs were locked in a neck-and-neck battle in the second. They got the crowd going as they bagged four straight points from 16-16. and forced a decider. The second-seed Indians were absolutely on fire in the decider at the start, racing to an 8-2 lead. One of the keys to their win was the subtle direction changes they were able to employ on defence, especially with Treesa Jolly showing impressive racket-head control. Gayatri was brilliant with her game awareness at the net, often taking the pace off rallies at the right time.
Treesa and Gayatri came into the match with a Head-to-Head of 1-1 against the Aimsaard sisters, with both matches going the distance in the decider. But here the Indians were able to dominate game 3 and save some fuel for the title clash in Lucknow on Sunday.
Treesa and Gayatri, who are the only Indians to have qualified for the prestigious season-ending World Tour Finals in China, had earlier registered a fine 21-8, 21-15 win in the quarterfinals over sixth seeds Go Pei Kee and Teoh Mei Xing.
