A woman and her sister have been arrested in Punjab’s Bathinda district for allegedly poisoning two children, in a case that has sent shockwaves through the local community, police said on Saturday.

The woman has been identified as Jassi Kaur. She was arrested on the complaint of her husband, Budh Singh, a resident of Phulewal village, who suspected the role of his wife in the death of their children.

A few days earlier, the couple’s eight-year-old daughter, Sukhpreet Kaur, had died. When their six-year-old son, Fatehveer Singh, also passed away on Friday, Budh Singh filed a police complaint, alleging that his wife had killed both children as part of a conspiracy, news agency PTI reported.

Following questioning, Kaur confessed to her crime, stating that rat poison was mixed with the food of the children, said a police official.

Further investigation is underway.

In a separate incident, a tragic incident in Bihar’s Aurangabad district has left four teenage girls dead and one survivor, with conflicting accounts emerging over what led to the fatal consumption of poison.

The incident occurred on January 29 in Moti Bigha village. According to the 14-year-old girl who survived, she and her four friends had gone to a secluded field where they consumed a toxic substance reportedly used to kill herons.
