Three schoolgirls were killed after a private bus hit the two-wheeler they were travelling on near a school in Hinganghat town of Maharashtra’s Wardha district, police said on Saturday, reported the PTI.
The accident took place on Friday morning near Ambedkar School, according to officials.
Police said the three girls were travelling on a two-wheeler when a private bus allegedly hit them from behind.
The impact caused the accident, resulting in the deaths of all three girls.
The bus driver was arrested following the incident, police said.
Further investigation is underway to establish the exact circumstances of the crash.
Victims identified
The deceased were identified as Samruddhi Rupak Dhamse, 15, Aruhi Raju Chavre, 17 and Misbah Javed Sheikh, 17. All three were residents of the local area, officials said.
The accident near a school has raised concerns over road safety and the movement of heavy vehicles in areas with a large number of students.
Police have arrested the private bus driver in connection with the accident.

Meanwhile, in an another incident, a 56-year-old man and his six-year-old grandson were killed after their moped was allegedly hit by a speeding government vehicle in the Salempur area of Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras district on Friday evening, police said, reported the PTI.
Another person travelling on the moped was seriously injured in the accident.
The accident took place when Subhash Chandra, 56, of Thulai village was returning home with his grandson Daksh after taking him out for food.
A villager, Sonu, 38, was also travelling with them on the moped, police said.
According to police, the three were crossing the road when a speeding vehicle bearing the word “Magistrate” allegedly hit the two-wheeler.
The vehicle was travelling from Hathras towards Sikandra Rao.
Grandfather and grandson killed
Subhash Chandra and his grandson Daksh died in the accident.
Sonu suffered serious injuries and was taken to Bagla District Hospital. After receiving first aid, he was referred to a higher medical centre for further treatment, police said.
The bodies of the deceased have been sent for post-mortem examinations.
Sub-Divisional Magistrate Sadar Raj Bahadur Singh visited the district hospital after receiving information about the accident.
He confirmed that two people had died and another person was injured.
“Initial information suggests that the accident involved a government vehicle,” he said.
Driver fled, police say
Hathras Junction Station House Officer Lalit Kumar said the vehicle belonged to Naib Tehsildar Ashok Gupta and was travelling towards Sikandra Rao.
The driver allegedly fled the scene after the collision, the officer said.
A witness, identified as Darshan, alleged that the Bolero was travelling at a very high speed. He also claimed that the officer travelling in the SUV did not assist the injured and left the scene.
The allegations are part of the ongoing investigation, and police are working to establish the exact circumstances of the accident.
