The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Monday rejected remarks made by the spokesperson of Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on incidents in India, saying Pakistan’s own record on the treatment of minorities speaks for itself.
While responding to media queries regarding remarks of Pakistani Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi alleging persecution of minorities in India, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that New Delhi firmly rejected such remarks, which came from a nation whose abysmal record on this front speaks for itself.
He said that Islamabad’s treatment of minorities is a well-established issue, and no amount of finger-pointing will obfuscate it.
“We reject the reported remarks from a country whose abysmal record on this front speaks for itself. Pakistan’s horrific and systemic victimisation of minorities of various faiths is a well-established fact. No amount of finger-pointing will obfuscate it,” he added.
MEA’s remarks came after Andrabi alleged persecution of minorities in India, and said that it remained a matter of deep concern for Pakistan. He had also called on the international community to take note of such incidents.
However, Pakistan is known to weaponise its blasphemy laws against minorities and vulnerable individuals. Pakistan’s blasphemy laws, particularly Section 295-C, have for a long time been under criticism from rights groups worldwide because of their vaguely worded provisions and extremely severe punishments. The law has disproportionately targeted religious minorities, especially Christians, Ahmadis, and Hindus.
