An undertrial prisoner was allegedly killed by a triple-murder convict in Bilaspur Central Jail in Chhattisgarh on Tuesday morning, police said, reported PTI.
Nilu Jagat (25), the deceased, had been lodged in jail since 2024 following his arrest in a Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act case.
“The incident took place at 9:32 am in Barrack E-1. Rajesh Rai, a life convict serving a sentence in a triple murder case since 2008, allegedly attacked Jagat with a heavy cement drain cover, striking him on the head multiple times,” said Jail Superintendent Khomesh Mandavi.
Other inmates overpowered the accused, following which Jagat was rushed to the Chhattisgarh Institute of Medical Sciences, where he succumbed to his injuries three hours later, the official said, reported PTI.
“The motive behind the attack is yet to be ascertained. Jail authorities have launched an internal probe and are questioning the accused inmate as well as other prisoners who witnessed the incident,” Mandavi added.
Pune Police arrest fiancee, alleged lover for pushing 26-year-old into gorge
The death of a 26-year-old Pune-based real estate professional, initially believed to be an accidental fall during a trek at Lohagad Fort, has taken a dramatic turn, with police arresting his fiancee and her alleged lover for murder, news agency PTI reported.
The accused, identified as Siya Goyal and 22-year-old Chetan Babulal Chaudhary, were arrested on Tuesday for allegedly pushing Ketan Vishal Agrawal into a deep gorge at the historic hill fort in Pune district and attempting to pass off the incident as an accident, police said.
Agrawal, a resident of Gahunje and a director in his family’s real estate business, was found dead in a gorge near Lohagad Fort on June 18. Police had initially stated that he had fallen nearly 400 feet while taking photographs during a trek with his fiancee and friends amid strong winds. Based on Goyal’s statement that Agrawal had slipped and fallen during an outing at the fort, Lonavala Rural Police had registered an accidental death report.
However, investigators later found inconsistencies in the circumstances surrounding the death, prompting a detailed probe.
Pune Rural Superintendent of Police Sandip Singh Gill said police examined multiple angles, including financial disputes and personal relationships, during the investigation.
“Our teams examined multiple angles, including financial disputes and personal relationships. During the probe, police allegedly found that Goyal was in a relationship with Chaudhary, a resident of Kondhwa in Pune,” Gill said.
