Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati on Saturday expelled three senior office-bearers of the Meerut unit after they allegedly attended the wedding of Farman Ali, the brother of Sumbul Rana, the Samajwadi Party (SP) candidate for the Meerapur Assembly bypolls.
Those expelled are Prashant Gautam, the Meerut division incharge of the party unit; Mahavir Singh, the Meerut district in charge; and Dinesh Kazipur. The BSP cited that they were involved in “anti-party activities” despite being warned by the party leadership.
Sumbul Rana, 33, is the daughter of BSP national general secretary and former Rajya Sabha member Munquad Ali. She was married in 2010 to Shah Alam, the son of former BSP Muzaffarnagar MP Kadir Rana. Sumbul joined the Samajwadi Party later and is now a prominent face of the SP in western Uttar Pradesh. Her brother Farman’s wedding took place in Ghaziabad on November 7.
“I have been a devoted worker of the BSP for the last several years. I have had a strong relationship with the party’s senior leader, Babu Munquad Ali. I attended his son’s marriage function only because of my bond with our general secretary. I am still surprised that other leaders and I have been expelled on this count. This is a dictatorial decision,” said Gautam.
Mohit Jatav, the district unit chief of the BSP in Meerut, said the expelled leaders were involved in anti-party activities for a long time. “They were warned to mend their ways, but they ignored the advice and faced the consequences. The BSP is a very disciplined party where such leaders have no place.”
Gautam claimed that Mayawati’s personal assistant had told him on the phone not to attend the wedding because of the presence of Sumbul and her father-in-law Kadir and his photographs with them might doom the prospects of the BSP candidate from Meerapur, Shah Nazar.
“Neither Sumbul nor Kadir participated in the wedding, but the party expelled us,” Gautamd Gautam.
The Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), which is in alliance with the BJP, has fielded Mithlesh Pal for the seat that became vacant after the incumbent MLA Chandan Chauhan was elected from Bijnor in Lok Sabha elections 2024.
The bypoll in the Meerapur Assembly constituency is scheduled for November 20, and the results will be announced on November 23.
