Tension broke out between two communities in Tripura’s Unakoti district after a dispute over the collection of subscriptions for a local fair. The clash left at least five to six people injured and resulted in several houses being gutted.
Police sources said the dispute took a communal turn, leading to violence in parts of the area. Incidents of arson and vandalism were reported, with several properties damaged. A few houses were also set on fire during the clashes.
How the violence began?
According to police, the violence began on Saturday at Saidarpar village under the Fatikroy police station limits. A group of people stopped a timber-laden vehicle and demanded a subscription for a community fair. An argument broke out between two groups and quickly escalated into clashes.
Tension increased further after a family from one community in the Shimultala area allegedly refused to contribute. Police said a mob from another community then gathered and set fire to properties, including a timber shop, and vandalised a place of worship. Retaliation followed soon after.
Security measures and internet suspension
In response to the situation, the Tripura government imposed prohibitory orders and deployed a large number of security personnel in the area. Mobile internet services were suspended across the Kumarghat Sub-Division for 48 hours as a precautionary measure.
At least eight people have been taken into custody in connection with the violence. Central forces carried out flag marches to restore confidence among residents. Police said the situation is currently under control.
To maintain law and order, the Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Kumarghat imposed Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023.
