The Election Commission of India (ECI) has written to the Commissioner of Police, Kolkata, after a ‘serious security breach’ at the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal on Monday (24 November). The incident has prompted the Commission to raise concerns about the safety of officers and staff posted at the premises.

In the letter written on Wednesday (26 November), the EC said the existing security arrangement at the CEO’s office appeared “inadequate” to deal with the situation, potentially endangering the Chief Electoral Officer, Additional and Joint Chief Electoral Officers, Deputy CEOs, and other officials working there.

Taking a stern view of the breach, the Commission has directed Kolkata Police to immediately take all necessary measures to ensure the safety of officers and staff both at the office and at their residences and to secure their travel routes.

The electoral body further instructed the police to upgrade security classification, considering the sensitivity of ongoing SIR activities and the upcoming elections in the state, stressing that no such incident should recur.

The Commission has asked the city police to submit an Action Taken Report (ATR) within 48 hours of receiving the letter.

Copies of the communication have also been sent to the West Bengal Chief Secretary, the Home & Hill Affairs Secretary, the DGP, and the state’s Chief Electoral Officer.
