If you have a desk job, there is a high chance that you often experience neck pain. But what if we tell you that massaging your neck for just a few minutes can help you find relief? If that sounds like something you’d like to try, here’s a quick massage technique by content creator Viktoriya Legkun.
All you have to do is take one hand over the back of your head and rub with gentle pressure on each side of the neck.
According to Legkun, massaging your neck can offer several health benefits:
Relieves tension: Neck massages can help alleviate muscle tension and stiffness, reducing discomfort and promoting relaxation.
Reduces headaches: Massage can ease tension in neck muscles that may contribute to headaches.
Improved blood circulation: Massaging the neck increases blood flow, which can enhance oxygen and nutrient delivery to the muscles and tissues.
Enhances flexibility: Regular neck massages can improve the range of motion in your neck and shoulders, helping prevent stiffness.
Stress reduction: Massage triggers the release of endorphins, promoting relaxation and reducing stress and anxiety levels.
Relief from neck pain: For those with chronic neck pain, massages can offer temporary relief by improving circulation and relaxing tight muscles.
Better posture: Regular massages can help you become more aware of your neck and shoulder posture, encouraging better alignment and reducing strain.
Nerve compression relief: Massaging the neck can help release pressure on nerves that might be causing discomfort or pain.
Are neck massages really that beneficial?
Regular neck massages can improve circulation and lymphatic drainage, and reduce inflammation and muscle soreness, said Dr Anup Khatri, senior consultant, orthopedics, Gleneagles Hospital, Parel, Mumbai. “You will feel rejuvenated and energised. It is possible to reduce neck discomfort, get rid of a headache, and also get that much-needed relief from neck pain. Embracing the benefits of regular neck massages will also help with nerve compression relief by releasing nerve pressure and making you feel better,” said Dr Khatri.
According to Dr Khatri, neck massage is known to improve one’s posture and alignment too.
What to keep in mind?
It is essential to be gentle with your movements. “Don’t apply too much pressure. Avoid neck massaging if you have any neck problems or injury, spinal injury, osteoporosis, neck surgery, or a history of blood clots,” said Dr Khatri, who added that one should avoid massaging a child’s neck as it is delicate and can cause intense pain.
