A government staff nurse in Karnataka was suspended on Wednesday for allegedly using Fevikwik, an instant adhesive, instead of medical stitches to close the facial wound of a seven-year-old boy.
The incident was reported at a Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Adoor village of Haveri district on January 14.
The suspended staff nurse Jyothi, when questioned by the boy’s parents, defended her action stating that if stitches are used, the marks would remain on cheeks.
The parents had posted the alleged act of the nurse on social media after the wound of the child worsened, prompting the Health and Family Welfare Department to suspend Jyothi for dereliction of duty.
“Fevikwik is an adhesive solution not permitted for medical use under regulations. In this case, the staff nurse responsible for dereliction of duty by using Fevikwik for the child’s treatment has been suspended following a preliminary report and pending further investigation as per rules,” Commissioner’s Office of Health and Family Welfare department said in a statement.
The authorities have been directed to monitor if there are any adverse effect caused by Fevikwik on the child, said the department.
The parents of the child rushed him to the primary health centre after he injured his cheek while playing.
