Krishna Jayasankar sets new Indian indoor shot put record in Albuquerque

Krishna Jayasankar, a 22-year-old shot put athlete, made history at the Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Championship in Albuquerque by setting a new Indian indoor record.

She recorded a throw of 16.03 meters, surpassing the previous best of 15.54 meters set by Poorna Raorane in 2023.

Her impressive final-round effort secured her a bronze medal, edging out Colorado State’s Makayla Long, who had held third place with a 15.98-meter throw. The competition saw dominant performances from Mya Lesnar (19.02m) and Gabby Morns (17.09m), who claimed gold and silver, respectively.

Krishna’s record-breaking feat adds to a successful week for Indian athletes competing in indoor meets in the United States. Distance runner Gulveer Singh also made headlines by clocking an impressive 12:59.77 in the 5000m, becoming the first Indian to break the 13-minute barrier in the event.

Krishna, currently studying and training in Texas, has honed her skills through stints in Jamaica and the NCAA circuit in the United States. Hailing from a sporting lineage, she is the daughter of former Indian basketball internationals Prasanna and Jayasankar Menon.

With this milestone achievement, Krishna has earned a spot in the prestigious NCAA Indoor Championships, scheduled to take place on March 14-15 in Virginia Beach.
