Lucknow: Junior doctor booked for ‘raping’ woman colleague, university suspends him | Lucknow News

A 26-year-old junior resident doctor of a medical university in Lucknow has been booked for allegedly raping a fellow woman doctor on the pretext of marriage, said police. The woman, also a junior resident, who belongs to a different community, is the complainant in the case.

The university suspended the accused doctor on Tuesday.

According to police, the accused and the victim knew each other and lived in separate hostels on the university campus. Police said it has been alleged that the accused misled the woman by promising marriage, following which she was raped.

University officials said the woman subsequently slipped into depression and allegedly overdosed on medication, after which she was admitted to a hospital for treatment. She has since been discharged and is staying with her family.

“The case has been registered under rape charges against the accused doctor based on a complaint referring to an incident that allegedly took place in September,” said the Station House Officer of the police station concerned.

The officer added that the victim has been sent for a medical examination as part of the investigation. Police said the woman’s statement will also be recorded before a magistrate.

Taking serious note of the alleged incident, the medical institution suspended the accused. The action was taken following an interim report submitted by the college’s internal committee, constituted under the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013. The accused will remain under suspension pending completion of the inquiry.

According to officials, the internal committee observed that allowing the accused resident to continue on duty during the pendency of the inquiry could prejudice a fair and impartial investigation. It, therefore, recommended his suspension.

During the suspension period, the resident will not be permitted to perform any official duties and will be barred from entering the university and hospital premises without prior written permission of the competent authority, except when required to appear for inquiry proceedings.

Police and institutional sources said a few days ago, the victim’s family had uploaded a complaint on the Chief Minister’s portal and submitted a separate complaint to the Uttar Pradesh State Women’s Commission.

According to the complaint, she was reportedly undergoing treatment for depression after the accused attempted to sever ties with her.

According to a university official, allegations have also been raised that the accused is already married and had been pressuring the woman to convert.

Police said further investigation in the case is underway.
