The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday issued an orange alert for parts of Vidarbha, warning of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, gusty winds and isolated heavy rainfall over the next few days, with weather activity expected to intensify from July 2 onwards.
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Nagpur, the southwest monsoon remains active and normal over Vidarbha, bringing fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall across the region.
The IMD said favourable conditions continue for the monsoon to advance further into parts of the North Arabian Sea, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand over the next two to three days.
Meteorologists attributed the prevailing weather to multiple atmospheric systems, including upper air cyclonic circulations over northern Telangana, north Gujarat and central Chhattisgarh, along with several troughs extending across Madhya Pradesh and Marathwada.
Rainfall recorded across Vidarbha
Several districts received moderate rainfall during the past 24 hours. Bhiwapur in Nagpur district recorded the highest rainfall at 6 cm, followed by Mehkar in Buldhana district with 5 cm. Ballarpur in Chandrapur district, Deolgaon Raja and Lonar in Buldhana district, and Bhamragad in Gadchiroli district each received 4 cm of rainfall.
Maximum temperatures remained above normal across the region with no significant change. Brahmapuri and Gondia recorded the highest maximum temperature at 38 degrees Celsius, while Yavatmal registered the lowest minimum temperature at 20 degrees Celsius.
Rainfall likely to intensify from July 2
The IMD has forecast fairly widespread rainfall across districts, including Nagpur, Wardha, Chandrapur and Gadchiroli between June 28 and July 1, while Akola and Buldhana are likely to witness scattered showers.
Rainfall activity is expected to increase from July 2 to July 4, with widespread rain forecast across most districts in the Vidarbha region.
Orange alert for thunderstorms
The weather office has warned that thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, gusty winds reaching 40–50 kmph and isolated heavy rainfall are highly likely during the first four days of the forecast period.
An orange alert has been issued for the first two days due to the possibility of moderate to intense lightning. Between July 2 and July 4, isolated places across Vidarbha are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall.
Temperatures likely to fall
While daytime temperatures are expected to remain largely unchanged during the next four days, the IMD has forecast a drop of 2 to 3 degrees Celsius thereafter as rainfall activity intensifies across the region.
The IMD has advised residents to remain alert during thunderstorms, as strong winds could damage weak structures, uproot tree branches and affect power and communication lines. Farmers have been urged to suspend field operations during periods of lightning and heavy rain, while the public has been advised to take shelter in permanent structures and avoid standing under trees or near electric poles and overhead wires during thunderstorms.
